About This Pub

Oh, let me tell you about The Faulkner – it's this gem of a gastropub tucked away in Hoole, Chester, where they've really put their heart into creating a space that's both cosy and full of energy since the new owners took over. I love how they've got such a varied menu with fresh, locally sourced options, from tasty small plates and pizzas that folks rave about to those classic Sunday roasts that feel like a proper home-cooked treat. The drinks selection is spot on too, with great beers and cocktails that pair perfectly with the vibe, and it's always nice to catch some live music or join in a trivia night for a bit of extra fun. But, and I say this as a mate who's been around a few pubs, it's not all smooth sailing – I've heard a few grumbles about food not always hitting the mark, like meals turning up dry or without much punch, which is a shame when the ingredients are meant to be top-notch. Still, with an overall rating pushing 4.4, it's clear they get it right more often than not, and for anyone in Chester looking for a relaxed spot to grab a bite and a drink, it's definitely worth a go, just maybe keep expectations in check for those busier days.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is just lovely – it's warm and inviting, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in, especially with the friendly staff who go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome.
  • The food is a real highlight; their pizzas are spot on, often described as some of the best outside Italy, and the Sunday roasts are proper hearty affairs with big portions and perfectly cooked meats.
  • They've got a cracking selection of beers, ales, and cocktails, plus fun events like live music and trivia quizzes that add to the buzz and keep things lively.
  • It's family-friendly too, which is great if you're out with little ones – they make everyone feel included, even the tiniest guests.
Cons
  • Food quality can be hit or miss; some dishes, like the crispy beef salad or fish pie, have come out dry or lacking in flavour, which is a bit disappointing when you're expecting that fresh, locally sourced goodness.
  • It can feel a tad quiet at times, especially if you're after a more vibrant pub vibe, which might make it seem a little subdued on off-peak days.
  • There have been mentions of preparation issues, like food sitting under lamps too long, leading to less than ideal experiences that could put a dampener on your visit.

We visited recently and found this place to be so welcoming. Food is great, especially the pizzas! Some of the best pizzas we have had outside of Italy. They have great ales and also made our 6 month old feel super welcome. Thank you.

I was very disappointed with my visit yesterday. I order the crispy beef salad, when it came it was very dry, the salad had no dressing and the beef was either hard or chewy, and lacked flavour. When the waiter came to ask if all was well I explained I wasn’t happy with the meal and he took it away and asked if I’d like to order something else, so although disappointed by the food I was happy with their response. However, when the bill came I had been charged for both the salad and the alternative meal I’d ordered. While happy to pay for the replacement, I explained that I didn’t want to pay for the beef salad. I was told that I’d have to pay for some of it as the chef had said that the food was fine, and therefore they would only be able to take £5 off the bill. I explained that when they took the food away and asked if I’d like to order an alternative, to me that suggested that I wouldn’t need to pay. I explained that it should have been made clear to me that I’d need to pay for some or all of the salad as well as the replacement dish - even though they took it away. I wouldn’t have eaten the salad but I wouldn’t have ordered another dish had I known that I’d be paying for both. The waiter said that was not their policy and that they would only offer a £5 discount. At this point I agreed to pay and left. I wish that I’d asked to speak to the manager but I was so surprised, I didn’t think to ask. I would not recommend going here for food, it’s at best average (based on what the others in my group ordered) and the service I received was appalling.

Nice, slightly upmarket pub serving great food. The share plates and pizza were great, the beer was cold and staff friendly. It was so good we stayed a couple of hours longer to do the trivia quiz.

This was our first visit & I was really excited when I read the Menu. There many choices that I fancied trying. I chose the fish pie & husband picked fish & chips. Unfortunately everything on my plate was dry, I suspect it had been under the heat/ warmer lamp whilst the other meal was prepared. When the server came to check if all was OK I asked for butter. Immediately the dish was improved with butter added to mash topping & the peas. The foccacia was beyond rescue. The pie was packed with fish & was then very tasty . Husband wasn't as impressed with the size of fish especially as he had opted for large. His chips looked golden, but didn't taste as good as they looked, possibly warm ups? Or oil needed changing? Nice environment though we were th.e only diners in on January midweek lunch time. pleasant helpful staff. Will give it another go to try something else on the menu.

We went for an impromptu Sunday roast dinner as in the Chester area and just wow! We’re proper roast snobs and this was one of the best I’ve had recently, proper home cooked, big portions and the beef was cooked to perfection. It was a little quiet in there which is a shame but the staff were really lovely and welcoming. Would highly recommend it if you’re in the area. Also though it was very reasonably priced at £15 for a roast beef dinner. Would also recommend getting the extra side of cauliflower cheese, that was amazing!
