About This Pub

Ah, The Island Queen – it's one of those hidden gems in Islington that really captures the essence of a traditional British pub with its own twist. Picture yourself stepping into this old gin palace tucked away on a quiet street, where the colonial-inspired decor creates a welcoming, almost homely feel that's perfect for unwinding with friends over a drink or a meal. The food stands out as a real highlight; folks rave about the steak pie and other hearty options that hit the spot after a long day, and the drinks menu is just the thing for exploring something new. The staff are an absolute treat too, always cheerful and ready to make your visit memorable, whether it's a family dinner or a work do. On the flip side, it does tend to fill up quickly, so you might find yourself jostling for space on busier evenings, and those moderate prices can add up if you're not careful. Still, for a spot that's got that genuine pub charm without the crowds of the high street, it's well worth a visit – I'd say it's a solid choice for anyone looking for a relaxed night out in London.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely charming, with a quirky, colonial-inspired vibe that feels like a cosy escape from the hustle of London.
  • The food is spot on – especially that steak pie, which comes highly recommended and is packed with flavour for a satisfying meal.
  • Staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, always going the extra mile to make you feel welcome, whether it's for a casual drink or a special occasion.
  • It's brilliantly located near Angel station, making it easy to nip in for a relaxed pint or dinner after exploring the area.
Cons
  • It can get quite busy at times, which might mean waiting for a table and losing that peaceful vibe you were after.
  • With moderate prices, it might feel a bit pricey for everyday pub grub, especially if you're planning a longer session.
  • Opening hours wrap up earlier on some days, so it's not the best spot if you're after a late-night tipple.

I have booked the Gin Lounge for a work Christmas party, and I was pleasantly surprised by how gorgeous the establishment was and how helpful the staff were. Truly a hidden gem in Angel; friendly staff, delicious food and very good vibes. Shout out to Ieva for being a big help in making sure our night went smoothly.

I don’t even remember how I managed to get here and went home from here after the 11-hour overnight flight from San Francisco to London. It was nice to catch up with some friends here, though. I was starving after the long flight, so I ordered a steak, and we sat on the second floor, which was quiet and private, just for our group of 8 people. The live music was great—recommended
