About This Pub
Ah, The Earl of Essex – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in the heart of London. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, it's got this warm, inviting atmosphere that's perfect for a casual catch-up with mates. The beer selection is brilliant; they've got everything from bold IPAs to rich stouts, and even some low-alcohol choices, so whether you're in for a full session or just a quick one, you're sorted. And don't even get me started on the food – the Sunday roast comes highly recommended, with people going on about how tasty it is, like the pork that's apparently to die for. The staff are dead helpful and always up for a chat, which makes the whole experience feel more personal. Prices are fair too, especially considering it's in a lively area like Angel, so you can enjoy a pint without worrying about the wallet. On the flip side, it does get a tad noisy at times, which is great for a lively evening but might not suit if you're after something more relaxed. Also, the outdoor seating in the garden is first-come-first-served, so you might have to plan ahead if that's your thing. All in all, it's a solid spot for a good night out – I'd say give it a go if you're nearby, as it's got that mix of fun and quality that makes it stand out.
Pros and Cons
Pros

The beer selection is absolutely spot on – they've got a fantastic variety, from IPAs to stouts, and even some non-alcoholic options, making it easy to find something for everyone.
-
The Sunday roast is a real winner; folks rave about how amazing it is, with one mate saying the porchetta was lush and well worth the wait.
-
Staff are incredibly friendly and chatty, always up for a quick natter, which really adds to that welcoming, local vibe.
-
Prices are reasonable for London, especially in Angel, so you won't feel like you're breaking the bank for a good pint and a bite.
-
There's a nice mix of indoor and outdoor spaces, perfect for enjoying a drink whether it's sunny or you're dodging the rain.
Cons
-
It can get a bit loud inside, which makes for a fun night but might not be ideal if you're after a quiet chat over your drink.
-
The garden tables aren't available for booking due to licensing rules, so you might miss out if it's a popular spot and you're not quick off the mark.

Honest review - come here often for drinks which is great fun!
Had Sunday roast for the first time today, and it was amazing. Kicking myself for waiting so long to try it.
You should come here and have it too.
Went in for drinks on bank holiday Monday. Nice inside and outside areas, a very good variety of beer on tap, friendly staff, reasonable prices for the area. I’d drop in if you’re passing.
Amazing pub located in the quiet streets of Angel, I'd highly recommend this place. Staff were incredibly friendly and wanted to chat, excellent beer selection plus non alcoholic / low alcoholic options. Then it turns out the roasts are fantastic, I got the porchetta (pork) and it was lush, lots of others ended up getting it after I ordered it.
One of the best pubs in London. Amazing local friendly social atmosphere. Very welcoming vibes. Good and attentive staff and beer garden at the back.
Beer selection is awesome in keg & cask beers. There’s variety in beer styles from
Ipa to stout, all good. Love to have a plate of hot food in lunch. Islington is nice area worth to walk and explore it more next time.
Good pub. Good service. I’ve come before and loved it then as well.
It’s loud but a fun vibe. Also they are quick to serve at the bar and food is brought swiftly.
Always a good night out.
