About This Pub

Ah, Plaquemine Lock, what a spot it's turned out to be! I've got to say, chatting about this place feels like sharing a pint with mates over a good laugh. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, this pub really nails that Louisiana vibe in the heart of Islington, blending Cajun and Creole classics with local British twists, all served up in a laid-back setting with live music that gets your toes tapping. The staff are an absolute delight – super friendly and attentive, making sure you're looked after from the moment you walk in, whether you're there for the happy hour specials or just a casual bite. It's dog-friendly too, which is a lovely touch if you're out with your four-legged companion. The food menu is packed with bold flavours, and things like the crawfish boil and fried green tomatoes have folks raving, though it's not all perfect; a few reviews mentioned some dishes feeling a bit underwhelming, like a dry po boy that didn't quite hit the mark. On the drinks side, the cocktails during happy hour are a steal, but the beer options might not wow you if you're a real ale enthusiast. Perched right by Regent's Canal, it's an easy stroll from Angel Station, making it ideal for a post-work catch-up or a weekend sesh. Overall, with a solid 4.4 rating from heaps of reviews, it's clear this place does a lot right, but it's always good to keep expectations in check for those minor slip-ups. If you're up for some soulful tunes and spicy eats, I'd definitely recommend giving it a go – just maybe check the opening times first to avoid any surprises!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The live music is an absolute blast, creating a vibrant, party-like atmosphere that really brings the spirit of Louisiana to Islington.
  • Friendly and attentive staff who go the extra mile, like providing dog treats and water for furry friends, making everyone feel welcome.
  • Delicious Louisiana-inspired food and drinks, with highlights like the crawfish boil and happy hour deals that offer great value on cocktails and snacks.
  • Its canal-side location near Angel Station is perfect for a relaxed vibe, ideal for winding down after work or enjoying a weekend outing.
Cons
  • Some dishes can be a bit hit or miss, like the chicken po boy that was described as just okay and a tad dry.
  • The beer selection isn't the most impressive, which might disappoint if you're after a wide range of brews.
  • With varying opening hours and a current status that seems a bit unclear, it might not always be straightforward to pop in spontaneously.

Came for the happy hour, stayed for the sensational vibes. Absolutely blown away by your staff’s performance. Everything was wonderful. Dog treats and a bowl of water were immediately handed to me as I came in with my dog - very thankful for that. And the food and service was impeccable. Thank you for a cracking evening!

Lovely place with good music. The staff was friendly, food was very good, I particularly loved the fried green tomatoes. Crawfish boil was also superb, the cajun fries a bit too basic. Very interesting part was the dessert - bourbon pecan pie. The taste of bourbon was very strong, but in combination with the pecans and ice cream it worked really well.

I had a lovely birthday meal here. The service was wonderful from the moment we entered the restaurant, everyone was so warm and welcoming. We were here during happy hour and the free cornbread was delicious and a really lovely touch. We ordered the chicken po boy which was just okay, if a little dry. But the shrimp was so sweet and fresh, I'd go back and order 12 of those, the fries hot and tasty as were the fried green tomatoes. But the standout for us was definitely the bacon beignets, we would come back just for a plate of those. And also we'd go back for the incredible cocktails. The gumbo wasn't to my personal taste, which was fine but the only slight disappointment was the rice in gumbo was undercooked and slightly hard and chalky in the middle. We did arrive quite early on and during happy hour most other customers seemed to be ordering oysters and happy hour specialities, so I wonder if this is why. Despite this, everything else was so wonderful Plaquemine Lock that it still gets 5 stars from us, they even gave us free little mint julep bourbon shots at the end of the meal that were fantastic, and we can't wait to come back and try other dishes on the menu.

Humble little pub, located just a stones throw from Angel underground station. Facing the canal is has great 'locals' vibe to it. We chose this spot for it's creole inspired food. Never expected there to be live music also, which really added to the atmosphere, beer selection wasn't the greatest but they had Estrella Galicia so my buds were satisfied. For my lunch I ordered the Gumbo with cornbread, amazing! Very good gumbo, but they went very easy on the spice (I prefer a lot LOT more heat) because of that I gave the gumbo a 4 out of 5, would've been better with more spice, but I do also understand not everyone like me can handle it. I also had fried okra with some cajun sauce which I highly recommend, was banging. My friend had chicken and pancakes with syrup, had a bite tasted great, but my choice in the gumbo was a solid one. Overall, if you're looking for some good grub and are lost for choices around Angel, hit up Plaquemine Lock, you won't be disappointed. Peace ✌️

All i can say this place is the highlight of my day. Have been many places to dine or drink but this place has something which other places are missing and its live music. Just pop in for a drink and they didn’t disappoint their customers. Great service. Very attentive and good staff. Good beer choice but the food smell people enjoying was so delicious. Surely coming back for taste their food. Btw keep that atmosphere alive, i’ll be back soon. Better to book a table before visiting as they were nearly house packed when i was there.
