It was OK. Food was average and a little cold when it arrived. Service was pleasant, but it was a bit chaotic and not the quickest. The venue feels cramped, is quite dated and in need of a refresh. The tables have awful metal structures underneath which are a pain to sit at. I hadn't been in here for well over 20 years and it felt like it had barely changed. It was pretty busy but it's sister pub, down the road, wasn't doing food that day for some reason (that's where we'd gone first) - which might have been why it was busy. Would I rush back? Not sure I would. Seems more of a drinking pub for locals than anything.
After many great meals & service over many years, did not think twice about visiting the Horseshoe. Only fear was whether we could be accommodated without having booked. We were surprised that other than 3 men at the bar every single table for food was unoccupied, something I had never witnessed in over 20 years. To the extent I asked the barman if they were serving food? They were and we sat at a table and the menus were brought. It was very limited in choice, as was the Specials Board, something I have never witnessed previously. Nevertheless decided to stay. The service was very slow, which led to an apology on both starters and mains being offered. My wife had the Cod Bites, which she enjoyed, but the chips had been heavily dosed with salt and would be better if that was left to customer to taste. I had difficulty in finding much Chicken in the Tai Green Curry, which was only luke warm. In fairness both starters were nice Garlic Bread/meatballs, but nowhere near the standards as in previous visits. We then realised that there had been a change of ownership. The final nail in the coffin was when I saw that 2 extra pints of beer appeared on the bill! It was difficult to see how that happened as we remained the only table dining throughout our visit. Having read other reviews since it appears that a charge of 2 extra pints had happened to another customer (James Roxborough). End of an era, won’t be visiting again.
Quality of food and service has dropped since the last few times we’ve been. Food took a long time to arrive and wasn’t near the standard of the pub previously. Some items were missing and the king prawns were tiny. Didn’t have anyone come in to take drinks orders after ordering food. It seems they’ve had a change in management, we won’t return
Delicious as always.
We loved the soup and the fish beautifully cooked with real chips!
Always at least one real on tap.
Today was our first visit to this pub, for lunch. The food was tasty and the service was quick - for us anyway. It's not the classiest of pubs, but interesting, with lots of alcoves and interesting decor. There was some confusion today about the dining system, which involves finding a table and then ordering at the bar. One couple walked out due to being ignored, and another couple were irritated with a waitress because no-one came to the table to take the order. The staff could be more presentable too.
