About This Pub

Ah, the Horse & Jockey, what a lovely little find in Stapleford; it's got that timeless charm from its days back in 1740, but under the current management since 2012, it's really hit its stride with all those CAMRA awards under its belt. I have to say, the real ales are a highlight – they're well-kept and ever-changing, so whether you're into a classic bitter or something a bit more adventurous, you're in for a treat. The atmosphere is just right for kicking back; imagine settling in by the open fire or a log burner with some soft tunes in the background, perfect for a proper natter with mates or even bringing the dog along for a walk and a pint. The staff seem genuinely chuffed to have you there, adding to that homely feel, and it's conveniently placed near trails and buses, making it easy to pop in after a ramble. On the flip side, if you're hoping for a full evening session, the hours can end a bit early some days, and it might not thrill you if real ales aren't your thing or if you fancy somewhere more energetic. All in all, it's a solid choice for anyone after a relaxed, quality pub experience – I'd definitely recommend giving it a go for a taste of what makes it a local favourite.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The selection of real ales and ciders is absolutely spot on – they've got 13 ever-changing hand-pulls, so there's always something new to try, and it's won loads of CAMRA awards, which says it all really.
  • It's such a welcoming spot with a friendly atmosphere; you can find a peaceful corner to chat or relax by the fire, and it's brilliantly dog-friendly with treats and water bowls for your furry mates.
  • The staff are top-notch – folks like Paul, Rach, and Austin come across as genuine and helpful, making you feel right at home from the get-go.
  • Being near the Erewash Valley trail and good transport links makes it perfect for a post-walk pint or a quick stop on the way to Nottingham or Derby.
  • They've got a nice range of menus for food and events, and the overall vibe is relaxed with quiet background music, ideal for a catch-up with friends.
Cons
  • The operating hours can be a bit patchy, with some days wrapping up earlier in the afternoon, so it's worth checking ahead if you're planning a late one.
  • If you're not keen on real ales or ciders, the drinks options might feel a tad limited compared to places with a broader selection.
  • It's more of a cosy, quiet pub, which is lovely for a chilled evening, but it might not suit if you're after a lively, buzzing night out with music and crowds.

Paul and Rach take us in there on our visits Great selection of beers, Austin is a sound guy and we really like the place, if we lived there it would be our local as well The beer menu changes, there are ciders, fxxk weatherspoons...this is a far better place Can't comment on the food but I hear the owner was a chef so next time we will eat something other than a bag of scabs

Welcoming and friendly real ale pub. Big selection of ales all well kept. Neepsend Double Century was perfect. Plenty of tables to sit at. Dog-friendly. Great place to meet up with friends and enjoy top ale - or have a quiet pint. Feel we should’ve been coming here for years.

I always remember this pub as being a grotty place that wasn't even worth a visit if absolutely everything else was closed. In the last few years it's been taken over and transformed. The food is nice, the range of ales is amazing and the staff are excellent. One of the few reasons I can think to visit Stapleford for.

Lovely stop off on a nice local walk for a bit of tapas and a couple of pints. Great atmosphere in what is one of Stapleford’s nicer watering holes.
