About This Pub

Ah, Tandle Hill Tavern – what a gem it is, tucked away in the Manchester countryside. I've got to say, it's one of those places that just hits the spot for a proper pub experience. The beers are a standout; they're well-kept cask ales that pair beautifully with those homemade pies and snacks – think crispy scotch eggs or a moist chicken toastie that could round off any walk nicely. The staff are an absolute delight, always making you feel welcome, and it's great that dogs are part of the gang too. Plus, with its rural charm and a roaring open fire, it's ideal for chilly days or after exploring the nearby paths. On the flip side, the access road is a right old mess with potholes everywhere, so you might end up hiking in, which could be fun or frustrating depending on the weather. And while it's cosy, it does get a bit dim inside, which might not suit if you're trying to get the perfect Instagram shot. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for us pub enthusiasts – the high ratings speak for themselves, and I'd definitely recommend it for a laid-back afternoon, just make sure to plan around those opening hours to avoid disappointment.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The selection of cask ales and beers is absolutely spot on – it's what this place is famed for, and you can really taste the quality.
  • The homemade pies and bar snacks are a real treat; folks rave about them, like that fantastic scotch egg or the chocolate and stout cake.
  • It's got that lovely rural charm with a real open fire, making it super cosy, especially after a walk in the nearby countryside.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming – it's like popping in to see old mates, and it's dog-friendly too, which is brilliant for us walkers.
  • With a solid 4.6 rating from plenty of happy visitors, it's clear this spot knows how to make everyone feel right at home.
Cons
  • Getting there can be a bit of a faff with those pothole-ridden tracks; you might want to park up and walk the last bit to save your car's suspension.
  • It can get a tad dark inside, which makes it tricky for snapping photos of your food, though it adds to the traditional pub vibe.
  • They're only open five days a week, so you'll need to check the hours in advance if you're planning a visit – no spontaneous stops on a quiet Sunday.
  • Food options might feel a bit limited if you're after something more than pies and snacks, as not everyone's clear on the full menu.

Hard to get a good photo of how amazing the Father's Day afternoon tea platter was as it was a bit dark was but it was by far the best afternoon tea I've ever had - anywhere. Everything on the platter was home made from the fantastic scotch egg to the chocolate and stout cake which was actually unbelievably good. I can't recommend this pub enough not only is it so cute and a proper traditional English pub with lovely staff but the food is just amazing. Behind the bar they also have a well stocked tuck shop, pies / pastries and local farm eggs for sale. I'd give it more than 5 stars if I could.

A great pub with real old-fashioned character. Well kept Beers, and well run by a lovely young couple. Well worth the 6 mile round trip walk every time. If there were more pub's like this there wouldn't be so many closing....

First visit after a recommendation. Well worth the trek to get there. Tip: Leave your vehicle at the bottom of the track and walk up; there are more potholes than there are craters on the moon!!

Found this place by accident. Google maps took Me the wrong way. What a friendly place this is. Lots of locals, but very welcoming. They do sell food, but not sure what. Theres a beer garden round the back and seating at the front. It's definitely on my places to visit again list.

We stopped in for a drink after a bike ride around tandle hills. We ended up having toasties aswell, they were really really good. Bread was crispy yet fluffy. Chicken was moist and tasty. Made a really nice ending to our ride. The landlady and lord are friendly and welcoming whenever we go in. Highly recommend 👍
