About This Pub
Ah, The Hillary Step – it's one of those pubs that just draws you in with its unpretentious charm and that perfect mix of chatter and comfort. From what I've gathered from folks who've been, the beer selection is absolutely spot on, with a rotating lineup of cask ales that's earned them some well-deserved awards, and they've got some cracking wines and spirits too if you're after something different. The atmosphere is just lovely – think cosy nooks and a front terrace for people-watching, making it a brilliant spot to catch up without the noise overwhelming everything. On the flip side, it can feel a bit steep on the wallet, especially if you're partial to those premium brews, and it's no secret that it gets packed on Friday nights or sunny days, so you might have to plan ahead or stand your ground for a table. All in all, it's a solid choice for a proper pub experience in South Manchester, with those happy hour perks adding a nice touch – I'd say it's worth a visit for anyone looking for a genuine, relaxed night out.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
Fantastic selection of beers, including cask ales that change regularly – it's a real treat for ale enthusiasts.
-
Cozy and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for a relaxed chat with mates or watching the world go by from the front terrace.
-
Friendly and helpful staff who make everyone feel right at home, adding to that community vibe.
-
Great spot to escape the city buzz, nestled in Whalley Range with a traditional pub feel that's won CAMRA awards.
-
Happy hour deals like £10 for selected wines make it more affordable for a cheeky drink or two.
Cons
-
It can get a bit pricey, especially for those fancy microbrewery pints, which might add up on a night out.
-
Sometimes it's hard to bag a seat on busier evenings or sunny afternoons, so you might end up standing or waiting.
-
The wine options are a tad limited compared to the beers, which could disappoint if you're not in the mood for ale.

Great selection of key and cask beers, changed regularly. Great local vibe, a great catch-up spot.
Pricey but cozy little boozer. Yes, it's a lovely place to go with a friend or a small group. But the fork-tongued voice that tells me I could just sack it all off and spend half my paycheck getting really drunk on fancy microbrewery pints by myself instead of whatever it is I ought to be doing - that voice is telling me to go to THIS pub. I'm just saying.
Chill vibe
Not too many people there when I arrive at 9pm
The waitress is friendly.
Good spot for nearby neighbourhood

I always love coming to the Hillary Step - great service, cosy lovely atmosphere, always a great selection of drinks on offer and the music isn’t too loud. My go-to spot to catch up with friends
Great little pub. I'm hesitant for even more to discover this pub as can be hard to get a seat on a Friday night or a sunny afternoon! Manager is friendly and helpful. Great beer selection. I used to be sad about limited wine choices until I got more into the beers! They also do cocktails. Great atmosphere for post work drinks, the best bar around for ages, nice to not need to walk down into proper Chorlton.
Would highly recommend a few drinks here and then food at tibetan kitchen just down the road.
