About This Pub
Ah, Mary & Archie – it's one of those spots in Chorlton-cum-Hardy that you hear about and think, 'Why not give it a go?' From what I've gathered from chats and reviews, it's got this authentic feel that's just spot on for a casual evening out. The food really shines; picture tucking into a roast that's packed with flavour and leaves you smiling – it's no wonder folks rave about it. Plus, the drink selection is spot on, whether you're after a crisp ale or something softer. But, and there's always a but, isn't there? Service can be a mixed bag; some experiences sound a bit frustrating, with staff seeming disinterested or even a touch abrupt, like forgetting orders or brushing off polite requests. And then there's the flat beer woes and that cashless policy, which might not sit well if you're old-school about payments. Overall, it's a solid choice with a high rating, so if you're nearby, pop in for the grub and atmosphere, but maybe keep an eye out for those little niggles to keep things balanced.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely spot on – their roasts are some of the best I've tried, making it a real treat for a hearty meal.
-
They've got a fantastic selection of drinks, from cracking beers to soft options, perfect for whatever you're in the mood for.
-
The atmosphere is lovely and authentic, giving off that warm, welcoming vibe that's just right for a relaxed catch-up with mates.
Cons
-
Service can be a bit hit or miss; some staff come across as detached or even rude, which puts a dampener on things.
-
There are occasional issues with drinks, like flat beer, which is disappointing when you're looking forward to a proper pint.
-
Going cashless might not suit everyone, as it can feel a tad inconvenient and adds to the costs for the venue, potentially putting some off.

Went in today and was told it was going cashless, as the accounts end up wrong because of the staff!! 🤦🏼♀️ teach them how to count or get new staff! Won't be going back. I don't understand small businesses, large % going to the bank for charges. Oh well their choice.
Shindigger Session is completely flat. Coolly detached hipster staff not interested. ‘We’ve just changed the gas’. You may well have, but it’s still flat! Why do all these hipster bars serve Shindigger anyway, absolutely abysmal beer, even worse when flat!
The best roast we've had in ages! Great atmosphere and delicious food.
Food was delicious but service was terrible. Started off with dirty cups, after politely asking for new cups they made it out as if we were being dramatic for asking for a replacement. They then forgot to give us new water. When we asked for more water the waitress held her finger up to dismiss us. After no apology we did get new water. After waiting 45 minutes we asked where the food was and got told that it was taking ages because we had asked for some cheese to not be put in a burrito. When the food finally arrived one meal was missing. After waiting for this to come we asked where the meal was the waitress interrupted us to tell us that we needed just needed to wait. Such a shame since the food was great!
This bar is a very authentic bar/restaurant which, if you are around; you should go to.
They have a wonderful selection of drinks (alcoholic and soft drinks) and with a nice foundation, which it has, it serves a great spot to stop in the local area.
We had drinks and food, both of which were good and also were complemented with a friendly atmosphere, which welcomes guests and makes you feel at home.
For starters, we had houmous which was smooth and creamy along with nice bread. Additionally, we had the salt and pepper deep fried cauliflower which was booming with flavour and in terms of cookery, it spoke to the customer a good start to what could be a great meal.
For mains, there was the aubergine burger, which is often something to be afraid of in the case of mushy aubergine which doesn't hold its shape and turns into a metaphorical mud pile of a burger. However, this burger was not that. The aubergine was crispy, and everything complemented eachother.
I had the chicken burger which was crispy and cooked well. One very important thing, that this restaurant did, was seasoning the flour which would dredge the chicken. This allowed for a very good flavour and didn't make the pickled overpower everything else.
The tacos that were served were very good, with a good balance of everything in the dish. However, there was a fair amount of residual oil left over. Along with this, the pickled cucumber could have been fresh if I were to be pedantic which meant that the dish, with a few tweaks can be a delicious dish.
Finally, a lamb wrap. This was well formulated and well executed and flavours worked well overall so no complaints there.
Overall Mary & Archie is a very good bar to stop if you are in the area; with very good service and our waitresses were absolutely lovely. The foods great, and the atmosphere aswell which makes this a good find. Also family friendly and holds quizzes on some days.
