About This Pub
Ah, The Hawke Pub – it's one of those places that really sticks in your mind after a visit, isn't it? From what I've gathered chatting about it, the food is where it shines brightest; people are going on about the burgers, roasts, and even the cheese steak bun being absolute winners, with portions that leave you satisfied. The service often gets high praise too, with staff members making you feel right at home, which adds to that cosy, welcoming atmosphere, especially in the beer garden on a quiet evening. It's got a moderate price tag, so it's not going to break the bank, and with a 4.7 rating from loads of happy visitors, you'd think it's nearly perfect. But let's be honest, no place is without its flaws – there have been a few grumbles about service slip-ups, like not having enough glasses or ones that aren't quite clean, and that whiff in the toilets can really spoil the mood. Plus, not every bite is a hit; some bits like the flat bread didn't quite live up to the hype. Overall, if you're after a solid pub experience in Victoria Park, I'd say give it a go – it's got that charm that keeps folks coming back, but just keep those little niggles in mind so you're prepared.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely top-notch – think glorious burgers, bavette, schnitzel, and roasts that folks rave about, making it a real treat for a hearty meal.
-
Service can be brilliant, with staff like Nano and Anne Marie going above and beyond to make you feel welcome and looked after.
-
The atmosphere is lovely and welcoming, especially that peaceful beer garden which is a hidden gem when everywhere else is buzzing.
-
They've got a surprising wine list and cracking drinks, like those spectacular bloody Marys that sort you out on a hungover Sunday.
Cons
-
Service isn't always spot on – some have mentioned running out of glasses or dealing with streaky, wet ones, which puts a bit of a dampener on things.
-
The toilets can be a letdown with a really bad smell, which isn't ideal when you're trying to enjoy your time.
-
Not every dish hits the mark; for instance, the flat bread was a bit underwhelming and unseasone, so it might not be perfect for every palate.
-
Booking and timings could be a tad unreliable, like when someone booked for 2pm and faced a few hitches.

The most amazing service and food in all of East London. Nano is a star! We had the burger, bavette, radicchio and shnitzel and all were glorious. Will be back as much as possible!
Had a delicious meal here today. Atmosphere was lovely, and our service from Anne Marie (hope I spelled that correctly) was phenomenal. Will be back.
Really enjoyed the Shnitzel roast, which was a huge portion, and tasted incredible. Service wasn't great as they had run out of glasses for water, the wine glasses used were also streaky and one was even still quite wet. The toilets downstairs had a very very bad smell to them. We had booked at 2pm and at 3.10 we're told that we needed to leave as another table was booked which put us out a bit as we planned to have desserts and more drinks.
But really enjoyed the food and will be back to check other parts of the menu.
I came with my four children last weekend for Sunday lunch - a tad hungover. A couple of restorative bloody Mary’s (which were spectacular) and I was up and running!
The food was amazing - whipped cod’s roe and ham hock terrine for an ocean going starter. Then some really delicious roasts - beef, nice and pink. Pork lovely and melting. Then the chicken is kind of a reverse chicken Kiev - a schnitzel with a big dollop of garlic butter on the top. Really nice.
Service was lovely - the atmosphere is buzzing but relaxed. And the Guinness was also smashing.
Highly recommend.
Just re-discover this place, small plates menu and a surprising wine list, small but decent selection, not obvious. Place was quiet and welcoming where everywhere else was packed so finding this peaceful beer garden was a treat. Food is good, cheese steak bun amazing! Flat bread not so much… unseasoned and a bit dense. Cured trout was good too but lacking something crunchy to go with. Lovely staff and nice wine.
