About This Pub

Ah, the Fox and Goose – it's one of those pubs that really pulls you in with its classic charm and that homely feel, especially on a rainy Sunday when the fire's crackling away. I've got to say, the roasts are a highlight; you get these massive portions with tender meat and those fluffy Yorkshire puds that just hit the spot after a long week. The staff are usually chipping in with a smile and a chat, which makes the whole experience feel relaxed and friendly. Plus, they've nailed the menu with fresh, seasonal dishes and options for sharing or private dos, which is brilliant if you're planning a get-together. On the flip side, though, I've heard a few tales of waits that drag on for drinks or seating, even with a booking, and some of the veg can be a bit underwhelming – like, why bother if it's not seasoned properly? And let's not forget, things can get pricey quickly, so you might want to keep an eye on the bill. All in all, it's a solid spot for a catch-up with mates, but go in with realistic expectations and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely charming, with a cosy fire burning and a lovely traditional building that makes you feel right at home.
  • The food hits the spot, especially the Sunday roasts – think tender beef or chicken with generous portions and big Yorkshire puddings that are spot on.
  • Staff are generally friendly and welcoming, adding to that warm pub vibe and making you feel looked after.
  • They've got a great selection of seasonal menus, sharing platters, and gastro favourites, all made with fresh, local ingredients.
  • Plenty of options for events, like private dining for up to 120 people, and even gift cards for a thoughtful present.
Cons
  • Service can be a bit slow at times, like waiting ages to get seated or for simple drinks, even when it's not too busy.
  • Some of the sides let the meal down, such as bland vegetables or disappointing cauliflower cheese that don't quite live up to the rest.
  • Prices feel a tad steep for what you get – that sparkling water and diet coke adding up quickly can sting a bit.
  • Little niggles like blunt knives make cutting into your food more of a chore than it should be.
  • Staff attentiveness varies; sometimes they're spot on, but other times they could do with being a smidge more on the ball.

Lovely building but other than that very disappointing. We booked dinner but didn't stay for food. It took about 10 minutes to get us seated even though we had a booking and they weren't busy, and about 20 minutes for our drinks (a diet coke and sparkling water - which incidentally, was more than £8!) to come. Very pricey menu and based on what we could see, definitely not worth the money. The layout is awful and the pub looks so unloved indoors. The carpet looks like it was last replaced in 1942 and last cleaned in 2009. Toilets were leaky, tap didn't work, and there was grime/mould under the hand dryer. Tables are marked, sticky and damaged. A real shame but the owners, management and staff clearly have no pride for the place. It won't survive in its current form - I just hope it gets taken over by someone that will put some love into it.

Lovely venue, staff very friendly and attentive. Food average. Bit pricey for what you got. I had roast beef, which was very nice but the knives were blunt so it was quite an effort to cut it

We came here for a catch up with friends, and ordered a roast and dessert. The food was quite good. The roast beef and roast pork were both soft and tender. The vegetables perhaps could have been more seasoned but otherwise it was a decent meal. The waiter was friendly and gave us an extra scoop of ice cream. The car park had plenty of parking when we came on a Sunday evening.

Nice country pub to enjoy a Sunday roast with friends, the fire was burning when we arrived which gave the place a homely and relaxing feel. The roast chicken was lovely, nice big Yorkshire pudding and a generous serving of 4 roast potatoes. However, the vegetables were very disappointing and let the overall meal down. For pudding we had an Eton mess meringue and chocolate brownie, both were very tasty. The service was a little slow at times but the place was busy (always a good sign) which would explain why. Also be warned the car park surface is terrible and not suitable for low cars or elderly / people with mobility difficulties.

Lovely place for Sunday roast, good portion sizes, we had Camembert to share, 2 people had the super roast, 1 beef and I had chicken. Chicken was lovely and soft. The pork on the super roast was the best overall. Only thing we didn’t like was the cauliflower cheese. Staff could have been a bit more attentive but overall we enjoyed our visit
