About This Pub
Ah, The Chequers in Writtle – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a second home, you know? From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the homemade grub is where it really shines; think generous portions of classics like steak pie or a stellar Sunday roast that leaves you properly satisfied. The atmosphere is spot on too, with a roaring fire and a garden that's ideal for catching up with mates on a nice day. They've got all sorts going on, from live music gigs to quizzes, and the team behind the bar are absolute stars, always up for a chat and making sure everything runs smoothly. On the downside, if you're after more variety for veggies, the options are a tad limited, and that garden might not be the coziest spot when the weather turns. Still, with a solid 4.5 rating and reasonable prices, it's a cracking choice for anyone in Chelmsford looking for a good night out – I'd say give it a go and see for yourself!

-
It's got a warm, welcoming atmosphere, especially with that cosy open fire and a beer garden that's great for sunnier days.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, always making sure you're looked after, which really adds to the homely feel.
-
Loads of fun events like live music, quizzes, and karaoke keep things lively, and it's family-friendly with options for dogs too.

Prices are reasonable for what you get, making it a brilliant spot for a casual get-together without breaking the bank.
Cons
-
The menu doesn't have a huge selection for vegetarians, so it might leave some folks wanting more options.
-
The garden seating isn't heated, which can be a bit of a letdown on cooler evenings, especially if you're visiting midweek.

Think it's more of a weekend venue, but nice open plan to the main bar. We visited midweek and unfortunately there was no heated seating in the garden at all.
Visited on 14th March for the “Song Doctors” gig and had a great meal - homemade steak pie was delicious, other half had scampi & chips which was also great. Staff were very pleasant and service was excellent, prices also very reasonable - will definitely return!
Really great value. Menu of good favourites with lots of choice. Warm and comfortable and very friendly and helpful staff. Would definitely recommend !

Wonderful friendly olde world English pub. Great menu, a Sunday roast to die for. Gorgeous open fire. A must visit venue. Thankyou for the friendly welcome.
