About This Pub
Ah, the Horse & Groom – it's one of those pubs that really warms the cockles, tucked away in the lovely village of Writtle just outside Chelmsford. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, most folks are over the moon about the place; the food stands out as a real winner, with pub favourites and fresh seasonal dishes that hit the spot, especially if you're tucking into something like that mouthwatering rib of beef that's got people planning return trips. The team behind the bar and in the dining area are spot on too, always up for a chat and bending over backwards to make your visit smooth, like when they happily shifted tables out to the garden for a group on a sunny day. And speaking of the garden, it's a proper gem for whiling away an afternoon with a pint, particularly their new ale that's not only refreshing but helps out the bees – nice touch, that. It's dog-friendly as well, which is brilliant if you're out for a walk and fancy a stop-off. But, to keep it real, it's not all perfect; there've been a couple of grumbles about some dishes not quite delivering, like small portions or meals that didn't live up to the hype, such as a underwhelming sea bass that left one visitor less than impressed. Still, with an overall feel that's overwhelmingly positive, I'd say it's worth a punt – just maybe check the menu first if you're after something hearty. All in all, it's a solid choice for a laid-back evening or weekend wander, and you'll likely leave with a smile, as long as you dodge any off days in the kitchen.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food here is absolutely spot on – think hearty pub classics and seasonal specials that leave you wanting more, like that dreamy rib of beef folks rave about.
-
The staff are a delight, always friendly and quick to accommodate, whether it's rearranging tables for a group or making sure everyone feels right at home.
-
It's got a cracking beer garden that's perfect for soaking up the sunshine, especially with their new Golden Nectar ale that's not only tasty but supports a good cause.
-
Being dog-friendly means you can bring the whole gang, making it ideal for family outings or walks in the nearby countryside.
-
The location in the picturesque village of Writtle adds a lovely touch, with plenty of walking trails around for a proper country pub experience.
Cons
-
A few meals have fallen short, like one person mentioning a tiny sea bass with watery sauce and soggy squid, which sounds a bit disappointing for the price.
-
Portions can sometimes feel on the small side, leaving you wondering if it was worth the spend, especially if you're after a more substantial bite.

This place was amazing. I had booked for 8 people in the restaurant but when we got there the weather was glorious and the staff were happy to put tables together in the garden to accommodate us. The food was really good and dog friendly too which meant the whole family could be there. 5* all round will definitely be back. Thanks Jamie and the team 👍
After being at a show all morning, me and mum headed home to Hertford and popped in on the off chance we could grab a bite to eat. Sat down the most amazing 2 courses. The rib of beef I will dream about for months! We’re planning to do the hour plus drive again with friends to enjoy another soon
Paid £20 for a tiny sea bass served with a watery cream sauce — completely underwhelming. The fried squid was soggy and bland. To top it off, it came with a sad, wilted salad that looked old and was better left untouched. Overall, a very poor meal. Definitely won’t be returning.
We visited today for the first time after having this beautiful pub on our doorstep for over 10 years and we have definitely been missing out!
We was greeted by a buzzing, friendly team of people and taken to our table by Milena. Her service was outstanding throughout our whole dinner where she was quick, helpful for menu advice and couldn’t be more willing to help and please.
We had a beautiful trio roast which was huge and everything was cooked to perfection, lots of fresh vegetables, all your added extras like pigs in blankets and Yorkshire with pork, beef and turkey cooked to perfection. Wine was delicious and cold with a really lovely selection. My children both enjoyed something of the children’s menu where the sizes were so generous with a great selection of your posh pub classics aswell as a roast choice for children. Desserts were BEAUTIFUL and there was lots of clean plates!
The pub has recently been through a massive refurbishment and they have done such a great job, it’s clean, fresh but modern with beautiful country colours but still the buildings original traditional beautie.
We had such a wonderful afternoon and have booked to go again for Mother’s Day, we were really impressed and this place is definitely a new place we will regularly visit.
Thank you to Milena for making our afternoon so special xx
Had an amazing meal here today at the launch of the refurbished Pub, Restaurant & Gardens with our family. Everything was excellent, we all had three courses and could not fault a thing. We received a warm welcome and excellent service from all at The Horse & Groom. John, Jamie, Nikola, Marketa, Joe and a few others who we did not get their names. They were attentive, knowledgable and could not have made our experience any more enjoyable. We shall definitely visit again very soon & would like to wish Good Luck to all concerned for the official opening tomorrow.
