About This Pub

Ah, the Rose & Crown – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem, tucked away in the heart of Writtle with its charming view over the green. I've got to say, what really stands out is the food; whether it's a succulent roast lamb that's fall-off-the-bone tender or a top-notch vegan nut roast that's got everyone raving, it's clear they've put real effort into making meals that hit the spot without breaking the bank. The staff are an absolute delight, always up for a chat and making sure you feel welcome, which makes it brilliant for a family meal or even bringing along the dog for a wander in the garden. That outside area is a real winner too, with its heated courtyard and spacious beer garden – perfect for those sunny afternoons when you want to enjoy a cold pint or a gin in the fresh air. On the flip side, though, it can get heaving on busier days, and I've heard tales of the team getting a bit swamped, which might mean things slow down a touch or you have to wait for a table. Still, with its long history and that homely feel, it's well worth a visit if you're in Chelmsford – just pop in early or book ahead to avoid any hassle, and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot-on, with hearty Sunday roasts, tasty vegan options, and classics like fish and chips that are cooked to perfection and great value for money.
  • It's got such a welcoming and friendly atmosphere – the staff go out of their way to make you feel at home, and it's perfect for families or popping in with your dog.
  • Love the outdoor spaces, like the large beer garden and heated courtyard, ideal for soaking up the sun or enjoying a meal al fresco on warmer days.
  • They're open seven days a week with flexible hours, serving breakfast through to late evening, and it's all at an inexpensive price, making it accessible for a casual get-together.
  • Plenty of drink choices, from real ales and lagers to a growing selection of gins and wines, plus nice touches like free Wi-Fi if you fancy working or relaxing with a pint.
Cons
  • It can get pretty busy at peak times, like Sundays or evenings, which sometimes leaves the team feeling a bit overwhelmed and might mean waits for service or tables.
  • Booking ahead is often necessary, especially for food, so if you're the spontaneous type, you might miss out on a spot without planning.

We all had a fantastic Sunday Lunch for 6 adults and a toddler.. Food was faultless … one of our family is Vegan and she said her nut roast meal was absolutely, without doubt, the best she’s ever eaten!!! The roast lamb was soooo tender and delicious. Two others had chicken meals which they were really pleased with. The staff are so lovely. Really engaged with us. They were so helpful and just lovely. Most definitely the best Sunday Lunch out in a very long time.

This is our favourite pub so welcoming and friendly and makes such a fuss of our little cockatoo. Bless you all tonight was horrendous for you so many people and so many orders. We came to eat but could see you were completely overwhelmed. What a night it must’ve been for you. Well done to all your lovely Team will be back soon when it’s quieter x

This is a very welcoming, friendly pub. Went to the Rose&Crown for Sunday lunch with a friend, and we had a lovely time. The service was very nice, the roast beef was delicious, specially enjoyed the Yorkshire pudding, followed by chocolate brownie and ice cream. Delicious! It was a very pleasant afternoon, enjoying the sunshine in the garden at the back. Totally recommend. Will go there again.

Traditional English pub food, excellently cooked and served with a smile by the very friendly staff. We had fish and chips, hot, crispy and faultless! Plus Welsh rarebit which was really delicious as was the broccoli soup!

Nice pub with outside seating which were well spaced apart. Huge garden space. Not just for smokers. Lovely to sit outside when it's sunny. Food was great & value for money. Great price for fish & chips. Chilli on jacket potato with salad was very tasty. Would strongly recommend this friendly pub. Staff were very friendly. Didn't have to wait long for food to be served. Clean environment. Even a small playground for children. Ample parking. 👍😊
