About This Pub
You know, when I popped into The Wheatsheaf, it just had that timeless English pub feel that's hard to beat – it's been the heart of Writtle for more than a century, and you can really sense the history in its cosy nooks and welcoming atmosphere. The beers are top-notch, with a great range of real ales and craft options that had me coming back for another round, and the staff are absolute stars, always chatting away and making sure you're settled in. Live music nights and events give it a fun, community spirit that's perfect for catching up with friends or meeting new faces. Oh, and don't miss their pizzas on the weekends; they're surprisingly delicious and make for a brilliant casual meal. On the downside, it's a small spot, so on packed evenings, it can feel a bit squished, and it's more of an adults-only vibe, which keeps things relaxed but might not suit everyone. All in all, it's a solid choice if you're after an authentic pub experience with great drinks and good company – I'd say it's well worth a visit for anyone in the area.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
It's got that classic, cosy traditional atmosphere that's full of character and makes you feel right at home.
-
A cracking selection of real ales and craft beers that'll satisfy any beer enthusiast.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, always up for a chat and making sure everyone's looked after.
-
Live music and social events add a brilliant buzz, turning it into a real community hub.
-
Their pizzas on Fridays and Saturdays are spot on – tasty, affordable, and a great addition to the usual pub grub.
Cons
-
It's on the small side, which means it can get a bit cramped on busier nights and lose that intimate feel.
-
Not really geared towards families, so if you're with little ones, it might not be the best choice for a relaxed outing.
-
The food options are a tad limited beyond the pizzas, so if you're after a full menu, you might need to look elsewhere.

Little village pub from the early 1800, real ales on tap and experience some real local atmosphere.
Great little local pub, it's not big but that's the whole charm. Friendly barmaids and great beer all in a traditional English pub. Should get 6 stars! ❤️
Small, cosy traditional pub with good selection of ales and beer and a few well chosen wines. Traditional pub food and a small set of tables out the front. Not child friendly although this isn't that sort of venue. Great for a drink before walking around the green.
Best pub in Writtle! And at the moment doing a pizza and a pint for £10. Best pizza I've ever had much better than Domino's. You can also do takeaway too
Fantastically cosy pub with nice range of real ales, expanded outdoor seating, and great service. I'm told the food is awesome, especially the traditional English breakfasts. Also an amazing atmosphere with the friendly locals on live music nights.
