About This Pub

Ah, The Four Candles – it's one of those classic Wetherspoon pubs that just feels like a proper spot for a get-together in Oxford. From what I've gathered from folks who've been there, the place has this wonderful old-school charm with its grand floors, stunning pillars, and those elegant chandeliers that light up the room nicely. It's dead easy to find a comfy seat and a clean table, making it ideal for lingering over a drink or a bite. And let's not forget the prices – everything's so reasonably priced that you can enjoy a stout from their beer festival or a full breakfast without worrying about the cost, which is why it's such a hit with the student crowd and anyone after a good deal. On the upside, it's open late and has that cozy, welcoming feel that makes you want to stay for another round. But, to be fair, it's not all perfect; a few people have mentioned that the food can be inconsistent, like the fish and chips turning out a tad greasy or a burger not quite matching the picture on the menu. Still, overall, it's a solid choice for a laid-back evening – just go in with realistic expectations, and you're bound to have a good time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely charming, with grand floors, glorious pillars, and pretty chandeliers that really give it a touch of elegance.
  • Comfortable seating and clean tables make it a welcoming spot to settle in for a chat and a drink.
  • It's fantastic value for money, offering affordable drinks and food options that won't break the bank – perfect for a casual night out.
  • A go-to for students and locals alike, especially for their breakfast deals and special events like beer festivals, which add a fun vibe.
Cons
  • Some food items can be a bit hit or miss, like the fish and chips being too greasy, which might leave you disappointed.
  • Occasionally, what you get doesn't quite match the photos, such as with burgers that fall short of expectations, so it's worth keeping that in mind.

This was a lovely pub for drinking, encompassing two grand floors! The pillars are glorious and chandeliers add a prettiness, counter is well-presented too. I enjoyed a stout from the options available during beer festival, seating is comfortable and small table was kept clean!

Best wetherspoons in Oxford. Balcony seating area tastefully decorated. Usual wetherspoons good value and service.

The place is nice and the food is nice enough usually but I feel I had to say about this burger today because this is what was advertised vs what I got. It was okay but not even close to the photo. I'll still come back as I want to make clear they do other tasty food. Just maybe don't order this burger.

always the no.1 spot for uni students It’s a snowy day even the airports are closing their runways. For me, I came here after an all nighter, incredibly excited for their breakfast. I got the traditional breakfast AND an egg and bacon muffin, which comes with hot chocolate (free refills). Traditional breakfast: £4.99 (fried egg, bacon, sausage, baked beans, two hash browns, slice of toast) Breakfast muffin deal: £2.99 It’s an absolute shout. Can’t wait to come back again, though hopefully not in this inclement weather

I always like the Wetherspoon chain, and fish and chips were always good. However in this specific one it was too greasy both fish and chips, I actually couldn’t finish the meal which was disappointing. But the atmosphere is very cozy!
