About This Pub

Ah, the Red Lion in Oxford – it's one of those places that just feels like a proper British pub, right in the thick of things near the theatres. I've got to say, the food is a real highlight; whether it's a hearty Sunday roast with perfectly cooked chicken and veg, or something lighter like scallops, it's all done with real care and flavour that leaves you satisfied. The staff are generally lovely, always up for a chat and making sure you're looked after, which adds to that warm, community feel. And let's not forget the beer garden – it's massive and a brilliant spot to soak up the sun with a cold pint or a cheeky cocktail. On the flip side, it does get packed, and that's when things can go a bit pear-shaped; service might crawl to a halt, and I've heard tales of drinks not quite hitting the mark, like a lukewarm hot chocolate that didn't impress. The noise can ramp up too, which is expected in a pub, but it might not suit if you're after a peaceful evening. All in all, it's a solid choice for a night out with friends or family – just pop in knowing it has its charms and a few quirks, and you'll likely have a great time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think delicious Sunday roasts, flavorful dishes like scallops and pork, and a menu packed with options that really hit the spot.
  • Friendly staff who go the extra mile, making you feel welcome and ensuring everything runs smoothly when they're not swamped.
  • Lovely atmosphere with stylish interiors and quiet corners, perfect for catching up with mates or a romantic evening.
  • That beer garden is a winner – it's one of the biggest in the city, ideal for enjoying a pint or a cocktail in the sunshine.
  • Prime location in the heart of Oxford, tucked away near the theatres, making it a fab spot for a pre-show meal or drink.
Cons
  • Service can drag a bit when the place is buzzing, so you might end up waiting longer than you'd like for your order.
  • Some drinks have had mixed reviews, like a cold hot chocolate or forgotten coffees, which can put a dampener on things.
  • It gets quite noisy at times, especially in a lively pub setting, so it might not be the best for a quiet chat.

For us it was something so strange we were staying in the hotel opposite and saw people eating fish and chips but we are not really fans of that We ordered a different fish but my daughter really liked it. I ordered scallops and pork and it was just incredible.

Enjoyed a lovely evening with friends. Service was slow due to a packed pub but staff were friendly. When the food arrived - was delicious and worth the wait. Also had amazingly spacious and chic lady toilets. Will come here again when I am next in town.

Absolutely beautiful place! Friendly but fully stressed service! Ordered a Cappuccino A hot chocolate. After 5 minutes I was served with the almost cold sugarless hot chocolate which wasn't tasty at all! The Cappuccino was forgotten! So we had to wait for that. The side dish Grilled Asparagus was absolutely tasteless and lightly warm not enjoyable at all! When the Cappuccino arrived it was full of coffee ground so undrinkable! Absolutely a waste of money! Luckily I was a tourist so I won't have to visit them again! The Toffee Cremebrule was good and served beautifully 😍 Sorry guys no harm but you need to improve with making better coffee

Great stop for sunday roast. The roast chicken and roast sirloin were well cooked and flavorful. I particularly loved the roasted carrots and parsnips! Well crafted drinks from the bar and a lovely ambience add to the experience. Would definitely recommend stopping here!

Great food and excellent service, though the atmosphere is understandably noisy, given it’s a pub. I recommend trying the three-course meal to fully enjoy the variety of flavors. The kids’ menu is generous as well. The staff are polite and attentive, ensuring prompt service.
