About This Pub

Ah, The Farmers Arms in Heskin – it's one of those classic village pubs that you hope will be your go-to spot for a proper pint and a hearty meal. From what I've gathered chatting about it, the place really shines with its fresh, locally sourced grub and a cracking range of ales that'd make any beer enthusiast smile. Picture yourself on that ample beer terrace on a sunny afternoon, soaking up the rural vibes with the family, maybe the kids playing nearby while you tuck into some well-loved favourites. The staff often get a thumbs up for being friendly and efficient, adding to that welcoming country inn feel. But, let's be straight, it's not all roses; I've heard a few tales of meals falling flat, like a tough steak that'd give your knife a workout or a roast that tastes a bit lacklustre with watery gravy and frozen sides. Service can sometimes lag, leaving you to sort your own drinks, which isn't ideal when you're out for a relaxed time. Overall, it's got plenty going for it if you're in the area, but I'd say it's worth checking the mood on the day – go for the atmosphere and the good bits, and just keep expectations in check for a balanced pub outing.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is generally spot on with fresh, locally sourced ingredients and classic dishes that hit the spot, especially their Sunday roasts when they're done right.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of cask ales, wines, and premium spirits, perfect for a relaxing evening with mates.
  • The outdoor beer terrace and large garden are brilliant for al fresco dining and drinks, especially in summer, with a play area that makes it family-friendly.
  • The staff are often described as delightful and attentive, always up for a chat and making you feel welcome in that warm, country pub way.
  • It's got a lovely relaxed atmosphere in a picturesque village setting, ideal for unwinding after a day out.
Cons
  • Food quality can be hit or miss, with some reports of tough steaks, overcooked meats, and tasteless sides that leave you wanting more.
  • Service isn't always up to scratch; a few folks have had to chase for drinks or felt overlooked, which can dampen the experience.
  • Certain meals, like roasts, have been disappointing with watery gravy and frozen veg, making it less reliable for special occasions.
  • It might not live up to expectations every time, as recent visits show a mixed bag of experiences that could put off return trips.

We had Sunday lunch there today, i cant say much only to say it was delicious. Meal freshly cooked , the beef was so very tender and cooked just right. I likè that they dont flood the plate witb gravy, but givebindividual fgraavy boat.. the staff are delightful, nothing too much troublè, and so pleasant. We will certainly return.

Just had a meal with the family. I had the mixed grill (or meat combo) the steak was so tough, you would need a chainsaw to cut it. I did mention this to the staff who apologised but offered no recompence or alternative ! Definitely won't be returning !

Went to Farmers Arms for a Mother’s Day meal as my mum had been previously 18 months ago and really enjoyed the food. Ordered from the set menu, the roast dinner was terrible. Overcooked beef, all sides were clearly frozen and the gravy was like water - nothing had any taste. Extremely disappointing, waitress did say that there are new owners and staff which would explain why it’s gone downhill.

Called in on a Friday early evening and had an extremely good meal. Quality was good, price reasonable, and the service was attentive, friendly, and efficient 👍 Menu is varied, and it's good classic traditional fayre, in a relaxed setting as you might expect from a country Inn. Premises are lovely and well kept with a large car park and a good sized beer garden for when we get the weather!

Recently went for a family meal to celebrate my sisters 30th birthday and the overall experience just wasn't good at all. We were the only table in the restaurant yet had to keep going to the bar to order drinks despite the lady serving our food asking the barman on more than one occasion to come and take a drinks order. We had 3 different types of wine and all of them were awful and barely chilled. I had the lasagne and was so looking forward to it however I'm not exaggerating when I say it was layers of mince and onion between pasta with cheese on top. There was no tomato, no seasoning, no béchamel sauce nothing! The garlic bread that came with it was just the frozen slices which would've been fine if they had been cooked on both sides and not just lightly grilled on top. Everybody else said their meals were poor for various reasons but nobody came to check whether everything was ok so couldn't feed this back to anyone. I did also witness a couple come in and ask if they could have a table to which they were told they had stopped serving food (at 8pm on a Saturday) they then asked if there was anywhere else in the area they knew of to go to which the lady carried on doing whatever she was doing and said 'no sorry' and walked off. As someone who previously worked as front of house and as a chef it was embarrassing to witness. Overall there was a complete lack of customer service and the food really really let it down. Extremely disappointing to think that we would've received better service and food at a cheap chain pub.
