About This Pub
Ah, the Bowling Green in Chorley – it's one of those pubs that really warms the cockles, you know? From the reviews I've seen, it's got this fantastic family-oriented feel, with play areas inside and out that make it a breeze to bring the kids along for a bite. The food sounds absolutely belting; think hearty carvery options, fresh salads, and even breakfast deals on weekends – plenty to choose from, and folks rave about how tasty it all is. Pair that with their award-winning beers and real ales, and you've got a proper relaxing spot for a chinwag over a pint. The staff come across as dead friendly too, always up for a laugh and making sure everyone's sorted. But, let's be straight, it's not all roses – there have been a few grumbles about service hitches, like meals turning up cold or confusion with orders, which could leave you a bit frustrated on a busy Saturday. Still, with an overall solid rating, it's clear the good outweighs the bad for most. If you're after a laid-back afternoon with mates or family, I'd say give it a go; just maybe pop in on a quieter day to avoid any potential faff.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is always a treat, with a fantastic selection from pub classics to a top-notch carvery that hits the spot every time.
-
It's brilliantly family-friendly, boasting indoor and outdoor play areas that keep the little ones busy while you relax.
-
The staff are genuinely welcoming and attentive, making you feel right at home even on a bustling day.
-
It has a lovely historic charm with plenty of cosy spots, like the beer garden and log burners, perfect for enjoying a pint or a meal.
Cons
-
There can be occasional slip-ups with service, like food arriving cold or issues with ordering certain dishes, which might put a dampener on things.
-
It gets pretty busy at peak times, leading to waits for food or tables that could make for a less relaxed visit.
-
From what I've heard, not everything runs smoothly all the time, such as problems with reservations or specific menu items being unavailable when expected.

I’ve been meaning to review for ages and everytime I go but then I always forget.
I eat with my friends and little boy here at least twice a month and the food is always belting. A hit with me and big hit for my son. He plays away happily in the toddler area of the playarea which is great for me and him. A restaurant I will continue to use not just because of the play area and food but the service is second to none . Well done team bowling green
We booked a table for 7 adults and 3 children for 4:30pm on a Saturday afternoon, our table was reserved right near the play area which was ideal for the children. The problem we encountered was when we went to the bar to order food from the carvery and told we couldn’t order carvery because otherwise there wouldn’t be enough food for other people, when we challenged their comments and explained that we had chose to visit there purely for the carvery, we were then told we could only order after table 12 had had their carvery and the only meat available was the last bit of gammon. After challenging this, they offered to cook us chicken, and therefore we agreed. Unfortunately the butterflied chicken breast was overcooked, dry and tasted of nothing but burned food. It’s the first time I’ve visited a carvery and been told I can’t have one!!!! What dreadful experience we all encountered today, we will definitely not be returning ever again.
We visited on Easter Friday, was a bit busy but there was not a hectic atmosphere. The staff were calm and collected even very attentive and friendly. What went from grabbing some quick food after a busy day turned into the highlight of our day. We had pleasant interactions and a laugh with the staff, who are all so genuine and kind. The food was delicious and plentiful can not fault it in any way. There was some amazing looking Easter cakes home baked by Beth a member of the team I assume, which were absolutely amazing 👏 honestly one of the best cakes I have ever tasted a sentiment my partner and dad agreed with. The resteraunt in a whole is a lovely place, homely, relaxed atmosphere, very clean. Not one thing I can fault about the entire experience. Staff went above and beyond and they are honestly a team to be so proud of. They are a team like no other and quite honestly the staff made the whole visit what is was and were the highlight of the evening. Thank you all very much for a perfect meal and a great ending to our hectic day
Ordered food at 12:30, 2 people having starters 2 were not, starters came promptly and good. Mains took till 13:50 to arrive, mine looked like the peas had been catapulted on the plate and 3 of the meals were stone cold the 4th got a carvery and that's hard to get wrong.
Handed the food back and it took 40 minutes to get fresh food, average at best .
Got fobbed off with excuses and a miner deductions
Will not be going back
I had the festive burger, which was very nice. There was some kind of brisket on it, which was very crispy and tasty and the little pigs in blankets mini burger/slider on the top was a nice touch. Tasty fries too, and delicious gravy.
