About This Pub

Oh, what a spot The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer – or The Volley, as the locals call it – is for a proper Bristol pub experience. It's got that wonderful historical vibe from its 1673 Grade II* listed building, making you feel like you're stepping back in time, and the rooftop terrace is just the ticket for soaking up the sun with a pint in hand. The beer selection is top-notch, always featuring the best from UK independents with plenty of classics and surprises on tap, and they've got a solid lineup of low and no-alcohol choices for those who want to keep it light. Pair that with their hearty British food – the Sunday roasts are legendary, with generous, flavoursome portions that hit the spot every time, and they've options for vegans and gluten-free folks too. The staff are genuinely welcoming, quick to offer a taster or a chat, which really makes the place feel like a friendly local haunt. But, fair's fair, there have been a couple of grumbles about the door staff getting a bit overzealous at times, with some strange comments or refusals that can dampen the mood. Overall, it's a brilliant choice for a relaxed afternoon or evening out, especially if you're after great drinks and a solid meal, just keep an eye out for those occasional blips to ensure a smooth visit.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely brilliant, with a rotating list of craft beers, ciders, and spirits from UK independents – always something new to try.
  • Their Sunday roasts are a real treat, packed with generous portions, succulent meats, and tasty sides; it's no wonder they're hailed as one of the best in Bristol.
  • The historic setting is charming, with a Grade II* listed building from 1673 and a lovely rooftop terrace that's perfect for a relaxed catch-up with friends.
  • Staff are friendly and helpful, often offering tasters or recommendations to make your visit even more enjoyable.
  • They've got a great range of low and no-alcohol options, so it's easy to find something lighter if you're driving or just fancy a break.
Cons
  • There have been a few reports of inconsistent door staff behaviour, like odd comments or random refusals, which can leave a sour note after a great evening.
  • The ever-changing beer board means you might miss out on a favourite if it's not on tap that day, so it's a bit hit or miss.

Really nice selection of beers, and lovely staff inside. Spent a really nice Saturday (31 may) afternoon there and stayed for the evening. Unfortunately the male doorman was on a weird power trip and left a bad taste in my mouth. Strange comments towards women and randomly refusing entry to people. I will come back as I like the place but if the doorman in question is working I'll take my custom elsewhere.

Great historic pub in Bristol. Always an excellent choice of locally produced Beers, Lagers, Stouts and Ciders, with a good rotation from local brewarys. The lunchtime food is good and their Sunday Roast is one of the best in Bristol.

The Sunday roast is consistently excellent! The food is always delicious, with good portions and great flavours. The staff are friendly and attentive, and they had a high chair ready for my baby as requested. A reliable spot for a great roast in a welcoming atmosphere. If you only had the chance to have 1 roast, pick this place!

What a lovely pub! The staff are all so friendly and welcoming. The beer selection is brilliant, and the Sunday roasts are to die for! We both agree that this was our favourite roast for a long time- generous portions, succulent meats, crispy potatoes, well-seasoned veg and beautiful cauliflower cheese and gravy- I honestly could have drank a pint of the gravy!
