Ah, The Engineer's House – it's one of those places that really captures the essence of Cambridge, tucked away by the river near the Museum of Technology. I have to say, it's got this warm, historic vibe that makes you feel like you're stepping back in time, and the pizzas from that wood-fired oven are just spot on, especially when you're enjoying them with a cold beer from Calverley’s on the terrace. The beers are a standout, with plenty of excellent options that folks rave about, and it's ideal for a laid-back catch-up with mates after a walk. But, let's be honest, it's not all smooth sailing; I've heard a few stories where service let things down, like when someone couldn't get water for their dog or had to deal with a dodgy drink that wasn't worth the price. Still, with such a solid overall rating, it's clear the good bits shine through for most, so I'd say it's worth popping in if you're up for the positives, just keep expectations in check for the occasional off moment.

They've got cracking pizzas straight from a wood-fired oven, courtesy of Al Forno, which are a real highlight and pair brilliantly with the beers.

The bar staff can be really friendly, and the selection of excellent beers from Calverley’s Brewery makes it a top spot for anyone after a quality pint in a historic setting.

Cons
-

Service isn't always spot on; some folks have mentioned unhelpful responses to simple requests, like not getting water for a pet after a walk.

Not every drink hits the mark – that mangoose ale sounds like a right disaster, more like off orange juice than beer, and swapping it wasn't an option.

It can feel a bit inconsistent overall, with a few reports of hospitality falling short, which might leave you wishing for a smoother experience.

Great chilled out place with friendly bar staff and cracking pizza..ideal for a change of usual away game pubs.
Excellent beers on the terrace overlooking the river. Calverlys pull it out of the bag as usual. Some excellent offerings in the way of pizza, and the vibe of an evening in spring is one of Cambridge's must do experiences if you want to get off the beaten path.
Ive loved this place but when they say hospitality is dying this is why.
12.30 Saturday afternoon after a dog walk was sat at the front with my dog who needed water. The bowls were empty.
Went to ask someone who was wiping tables she said speak to the bar they will give you some. Went to the bar dog in one hand drink in the other. Asked one of the 3 staff behind the bar (which had no customers) who said “the bowls are are the front”.
I replied i know but they are empty.
The reply was yeh the taps over there by the toilets you can go fill them up.
3 staff stood there. No customers. No help.
Great little canal side spot with Great beer and amazing pizza
.
DO NOT get the mangoose ale.
It doesn't taste or look like a beer but more a homemade attempt to ferment orange juice. DO NOT recommend, it shouldn't even be sold, it is disgusting. We tried to swap it for somthing drinkable but the bartender wasn't having any of it (even though it was £5.40 for 2/3 pint).
I DO however recommend the glaxis dwag ale ( cloudy pilsner) and the mosaic and simcone (bitters)
Pizza were fresh and surprisingly very delicious! They only serve pizzas, no other pub food
All their ales are made from the mill road brewery where they have a 2nd indoor pub.
