About This Pub

Ah, the Duke of Wellington in Newcastle – it's one of those pubs that really captures the spirit of a good old British boozer, right in the thick of things on High Bridge. I've got to say, the selection of beers is spot on; whether you're after a classic ale or something a bit different, they've got you covered, and at prices that won't break the bank – that two-for-five-quid offer is a winner for a casual catch-up. The atmosphere is just lovely, with its traditional decor that makes you feel like you're stepping back in time, and on a good day, the staff are absolute gems, like when they dash next door to grab more of your favourite brew. But, let's be honest, it's not all pints and cheers; there have been moments where the service falls flat, such as having to wake up the bar team or getting nudged out early when last orders come way before the advertised time. Still, with an overall rating hovering around that solid 4.1, it's clear most folks have a good time here. If you're popping in for the footy or a midweek pint, I'd say give it a go – just keep your expectations in check for those quieter moments, and you'll likely walk away with a smile.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The pub has a fantastic selection of beers and drinks, making it a top spot for a proper pint in the heart of Newcastle.
  • It's got that classic old-style vibe, which gives it a warm, traditional feel that's perfect for a relaxed evening out.
  • Prices are pretty reasonable, like those two-for-five-quid beer deals that make it easy on the wallet.
  • The staff can be really helpful and friendly at times, going the extra mile to sort things out, which adds a nice personal touch.
Cons
  • Service can be a bit dodgy sometimes, like when the bar staff seem a tad too relaxed and you have to nudge them awake.
  • They call last orders earlier than advertised, which is a bit of a letdown if you're settling in for the night.
  • It gets quite busy, and that can lead to some frustrations if things aren't running smoothly.

Stopped by to watch the footy bought two beers as it was 2 for five quid. I had to wake the barmaid up to get a drink. Quite busy place on a Tuesday evening

Nice pub, decent selection, but last orders called at 9:40pm being told to leave by 10 is odd for a pub, especially with closing time advertised as 11:30pm.

Four of us came to this pub Sunday afternoon 18th Feb. Great selection of beers available. However I was on Newcastle Brown Ale and got the last bottle. Donna who was in charge of the bar went next door and made sure there were more available. Thanks for great and friendly service. We will call again.JB
