About This Pub

Ah, Black Garter in Newcastle – what a gem it is, tucked away in the historic Grainger market area. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, this place really nails that classic pub feel, with a warm and fun-loving atmosphere that's perfect for sinking a pint and chatting away the evening. It's especially brilliant if you're into sports; they've got loads of screens dotted about, showing all the major events like football and rugby, so you won't miss a moment of the action. The drinks deals are spot on too – nothing fancy, just good, honest prices that make it easy to enjoy a few without breaking the bank. On the flip side, it's not the place for families since it's adults-only, which keeps things more relaxed for the grown-ups but might put off those wanting a more inclusive outing. Overall, though, it's got that genuine community vibe where the staff are dead helpful and the crowd's up for a good time, making it a solid pick for anyone after a proper pub experience in Newcastle. I'd say give it a go if you're in the area; you might just find your new favourite spot for a cheeky midweek pint or a lively weekend sesh.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely buzzing – it's a warm, inviting spot where you can really feel the community spirit and have a laugh with friends.
  • They're brilliant for sports fans, with plenty of HD screens showing everything from the Premier League to Formula 1, making it a top choice for catching the big games.
  • Drinks are reasonably priced, like that pint of Guinness or Neck Oil for under a fiver, which makes it a wallet-friendly option for a night out.
  • The staff are incredibly helpful and polite, always up for a chat and making sure everyone feels welcome.
Cons
  • It's strictly adults-only, so if you're looking for a family-friendly venue, this might not be the one to pop in with the little ones.
  • While it's improved a lot, some folks might still have old perceptions of it being a bit rough around the edges, even if the reality is much more welcoming now.

First time in this bar in the 22 years I have lived in the UK. It had such a reputation for being rough as a chip. It can't be further from the truth. Amazing community of people who clearly have history together. The place is friendly, drinks are a good price. Staff friendly and happy. The entertainment was good. If your passing drop in.
