About This Pub
Oh, let me tell you about The Donkey – it's one of those hidden gems that's part of the JW Lees family, Manchester's oldest brewery, and it's got that classic pub charm that's hard to beat. I love how it feels so welcoming; the staff are brilliant, always ready with a smile and making sure you're comfortable, which really adds to the relaxed atmosphere. The beers are spot on, reasonably priced and brewed with real heritage, making it a top choice for anyone who appreciates a good pint with friends. It's got a clean pool table and that community spirit where you can just unwind, but honestly, it's not the most convenient location if you're coming from further afield – it's a bit off the beaten path in Rochdale. One downside is the lack of food; it's mostly just drinks, which might leave you wanting if you're after a full meal, and it's more suited to a quiet evening than a big night out. All in all, if you're after a genuine, no-fuss pub experience, it's worth seeking out, but keep in mind it might not tick every box for a more lively crowd.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is absolutely spot on – it's a proper welcoming spot that makes you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
-
Friendly staff who go the extra mile; they're always up for a chat and make sure everyone's having a good time.
-
Great selection of beers from JW Lees, Manchester's oldest brewery – the pints are reasonably priced and hit the spot every time.
-
It's got a real community feel, perfect for a relaxed evening with mates, and they've got a clean pool table which is a rare treat.
-
Dog-friendly and family-oriented in places, so it's versatile for different get-togethers.
Cons
-
It's a bit out of the way in Rochdale, so it might not be the easiest spot to pop into if you're not local.
-
They don't usually serve food, which is a shame if you're after a bite with your drink – though they did pull off a great breakfast once.
-
Not the place for a lively night out; it's more about enjoying a quiet pint rather than a buzzing party scene.
-
Opening hours can vary a tad, typically starting around 3 PM, so it might not suit early birds.

Good size pub with a clean pool table (hard to fine in town). Friendly staff and nice drink selection. Will recommend to people who want to enjoy there drink. This is not a party night pitstop! Sorry!
Lovely classic pub, don't think they do food usually which is a shame but this was a race trip and we met there in the morning, well what a great buffet breakfast they did for us, definitely didn't disappoint so just a big thankyou to the owner's and the beer is reasonably priced and a nice friendly atmosphere.
A proper, proper no nonsense pub set in the heart of the community. Friendly staff, welcoming locals and great beer.
Music set at sensible level and thankfully no diners, just beer.
Once nominated JW Lees pub of the year and for good reason.
Wished I lived close by.....
