About This Pub
Ah, The Denton in Newcastle upon Tyne is one of those pubs that just feels like a second home, you know? From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, it's all about that classic Ember Inns charm with a warm, inviting atmosphere where you can kick back with friends over a pint or tuck into some seriously good pub grub. The staff really shine through in the reviews; folks rave about how attentive and friendly they are, always checking in to make sure everything's spot on, which adds such a nice touch to the experience. And the food? Well, it's a winner – affordable options with hearty portions, from their fixed-price menus to special Sunday roasts, and they've got everyone covered with choices for kids and plant-based eaters. Plus, it's brilliant for sports fans with screens everywhere, and being dog-friendly means it's great for a walk in the area followed by a stop-off. On the flip side, while the recent reviews are glowing with five-star praise, the overall rating dips to 4.2, suggesting there might be the odd off day or queue during peak times that could put a dampener on things. Also, those closing times seem a bit on the early side, which might not suit if you're hoping for a proper night out. All in all, it's a solid spot for a relaxed catch-up, but worth keeping in mind for those little niggles to manage expectations.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely brilliant – always friendly and go the extra mile, like Gail, Leah, and Jack, who make you feel right at home with their warm service and cheeky banter.
-
The food is spot on; think generous portions of tasty dishes like lasagne and hunters schnitzel, plus great value deals like the three-course option, and they've got options for kids, veggies, and vegans too.
-
It's got a cracking atmosphere for catching up with mates, watching live sports on loads of screens, or even bringing the dog along – perfect for a relaxed day out.
-
Being in a handy spot near Newcastle city centre and the A1 makes it easy to pop in after exploring or a match at St James' Park.
Cons
-
The overall rating is a solid 4.2, but with some mixed feedback in the wider reviews, it might not hit the mark every time, perhaps with occasional service slip-ups or busier evenings.
-
Closing times can feel a tad early, especially on Sundays wrapping up around 11pm or even 4pm in some listings, which might disappoint if you're after a late-night pint.

My partner and I love it here always a top night with good atmosphere and great staff, especially the lovely Gail goes above and beyond :)
Great pub! Been a die hard regular in The Big D for 37 years and its brilliant. Brilliant drinks, brilliant food and brilliant atmosphere with all the Old Denton Back Bar lads that have been here forever, the banter is class. All sports shown on a load of screens everywhere round the bar, the place is bouncing on NUFC live match days as well. But to top it all off the staff are quality too, a few of them have grown up with place and are absolute class... Gail, Jackie, Julie, Matt and Dan are all epic. Love the place
Leah was a great server and waitress. Very friendly and service with a smile. Lovely girl. She checked us several times to make sure we were happy with everything. No complaints about the food. Lasagne and hunters schniztel were good and we would order again. Thank you :-)
I had an amazing experience at the Denton! The food was absolutely delicious—fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. What really stood out, though, was the service. Our server jack was incredibly friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. They made great recommendations and made us feel genuinely welcome from start to finish. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting too. Definitely one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in a while. Highly recommend
I've visited this pub a few times now with friends and my dog, and it never disappoints. The food is fantastic, with generous portions that are both delicious and affordable - especially the three-course deal, which is amazing value.
The staff are always welcoming and friendly, and the dog-friendly atmosphere is a lovely bonus. My dog loves it here as much as I do, which makes every visit even better. Highly recommend!
