About This Pub

Ah, the Bay Horse – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper community hub in Whickham, you know? From what I've gathered from folks' experiences, it's got this warm, inviting vibe where the staff go out of their way to make sure you're looked after, whether you're popping in for a quick bite or settling in for the big match. The food really hits the spot too; think hearty, well-priced meals that leave you satisfied without emptying your wallet, and it's brilliant for groups or even private dos like wakes, based on what some have shared. On the flip side, though, it does get a bit heaving at times, especially on busier nights, which might put off anyone after a peaceful evening, and parking can be a right faff if you're driving over. Still, with perks like being dog-friendly and having a cosy beer garden, it's worth a visit if you're in Newcastle – just plan ahead and you'll have a grand time!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely brilliant – always friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • The food is spot on; tasty, well-cooked dishes with great value, like that mix of five plates for £21 that's a real winner.
  • It's got a lively and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for catching up with mates, enjoying a pub quiz, or watching live sports like the Women's Euros.
  • Dog-friendly vibes make it a great spot if you're out with your furry friend, and they've got handy facilities like a beer garden and WiFi.
  • Honest pricing means you get good grub without breaking the bank, and it's well-suited for private get-togethers or events.
Cons
  • It can get a bit noisy and busy inside, especially on Friday evenings, which might not suit everyone looking for a quiet pint.
  • Parking is a bit of a hassle with limited spaces, so you might end up walking a short way or hunting around.
  • The outside seating can feel a tad chilly, even if it's a nice option for escaping the indoor bustle.

We had a really good experience here. We were looking for a dog friendly pub that wouldn't be too busy and noisy for our dog. Got to the pub, and it was quite noisy and busy inside... but then it was a Friday evening, so we anticipated it would be. Even though it was a little chilly, we sat outside as it was quieter. The outdoor seating is nicely laid out and had a nice relaxed feel to it. Ordering food by the app was so easy, and you can do it without visiting the busy bar. Great if you have a dog. The food was great. Tasted good and looked good. One side order was wrong, but they quickly changed it and brought it back out with lots of apologies. We also placed an app order for Chardonnay, but they'd run out and came out to tell us and ask if we wanted a different wine. When this was brought out, they said they'd put the 50p difference back onto our card without us asking. Brilliant. A great pub that is well worth visiting.

Although there isn't much parking here the inside was great. Was full of nice sensible people with no beer swilling going on. I tried a few plates of the small portions and they were all good. The pork tacos were really nice! They even made a very nice cappuccino. It's quiet in here so feels relaxing and the place is clean. They have loads of TVs in here so no matter where you look you can see a TV. I don't watch sport but for the sport fanatics I'm sure that's a handy thing.
