About This Pub

Ah, The Darby Digger – it's one of those places that really pulls you in with its mix of traditional carvery roasts and tasty stone-baked pizzas, all at prices that won't break the bank. I've got to say, the positive vibes from most folks are infectious; the staff sound like they're on top form, making sure everyone feels looked after, whether you're popping in for a quick breakfast or a full evening meal. Those daily deals, like two cocktails for £14 or half-price on pizzas, make it feel like a real gem for getting together with mates or family without spending a fortune. And it's nice to see they're all about giving back to the community, letting you have a say in which charities they support. On the flip side, though, it's not all smooth sailing – a few people have had off days with the food, like ending up with dry veg or a Yorkshire pud that could double as a frisbee, and apparently, the carvery might not always have the full spread of meats, which is a bit disappointing if you're craving a proper beef roast. Service can drag a tad sometimes, especially if you're trying to juggle kids or a pram, so it pays to keep expectations in check. Overall, if you're in Wickford and fancy a relaxed spot with good grub and a friendly atmosphere, it's worth a go – just go in with an open mind and maybe check out those deals first to make the most of it.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food here is generally spot on, especially the carvery and those stone-baked pizzas – they're made with fresh dough and come out piping hot, offering great value for a family meal out.
  • The staff are an absolute delight; from what I've heard, they're super attentive and go the extra mile, like giving an extra sausage or looking after families with young ones.
  • They've got some cracking deals, like 50% off pizzas and burgers, plus that Stonehouse Rewards app where you can collect stamps for free meals – it's a proper treat for regulars.
  • It's a family-friendly spot with plenty of options for veggies and vegans, and they're all about supporting the local community by letting you vote on charities to help.
Cons
  • Food quality can be hit or miss; some folks have mentioned dry veggies or rock-hard Yorkshire puddings, which is a shame when you're looking forward to a proper roast.
  • There might be waits for your meal, even if it's not too busy, as one review noted it taking a while for drinks and food to arrive.
  • Meat options on the carvery aren't always what you'd expect – like no beef on certain days because of costs, so you could end up with just gammon and turkey.
  • It seems like service and offerings can vary, with a couple of underwhelming experiences mixed in among the positives, so it might not be perfect every visit.

£13.99 carvery paid at the bar. Went to get our beef dinner to be told by the chef that they are not cooking beef every day as it cost to much. The 2 meats was gammon and turkey. The veg was dry and the Yorkshire pudding was so hard and dry. Told the waitress she said she would get us some fresh ones.waitress come and cleared the table Didn’t see her again till we was leaving and she shouted out BYE. Maybe they should have less staff then they could cook beef daily. Won’t be going back

We came here for lunch was quite empty so when we arrived we asked where they would like us to sit and we were told we could sit anywhere so with a pram and baby and a young toddler we tried to find a table out of the way and ordered our food by phone, unfortunately it was taking a while for our drinks to arrive so we went to go and find out where the drinks were to then be greeted by a waitress who told us quite coldly that we must not be sitting there as it was reserved by weekly regulars although there was no reservation card or anything on the table to tell us that - but it was as if we should have somehow known! We were told to move straight away although I was in the middle of feeding my baby and we had settled ourselves at the table for quite a while already. We were moved to another table where the party who had apparently reserved our table came over and apologised for the fuss and that they had already seated at another table so the table we had been removed from remained empty. A little while after the same waitress was then wandering around with our drinks confused at where we had gone although she had just moved us so we then had to tell her to bring them to the table that she had just seated us at instead. Such a shame the food was lovely despite the service, we were hoping to find a place to visit regularly as had heard great things!

When I came to the restaurant for a carvery with the care home, it was such pleasant visit. Staff were amazing to our residents and us! We would happily come back and recommend to others. Food was amazing!! Especially the potato’s!!!

Had a lovely meal with the family this evening and one particular member of staff stood out amongst the already great team - as promised the 5* review for the "Ginger Chef" (his words). Thank you for truly looking after our table and for the outstanding service you provided tonight. Every member of staff was incredible but I felt he needed a mention and shout-out.
