About This Pub

Ah, the Crown & Anchor – it's one of those classic Manchester spots that's just a stone's throw from the city centre, run by Joseph Holt, so you know the beers are going to be spot on. I love how it's got that cosy, traditional pub feel with a bit of everything on offer, whether you're popping in for a quick pint of their award-winning lager, tucking into some tasty pizzas or vegan dishes, or joining in on the quiz night with free pizza on Mondays – it's all about that community vibe. The staff really make it shine; they're so approachable and eager to help, like sorting out a smooth check-out or getting the sports on for you. But, let's be honest, it's not perfect – I've heard a few tales of issues with the rooms, like sharing just one key or dealing with shared bathrooms, which might not be ideal if you're staying over. And it can get a tad loud, especially with the live music and crowds, so if you're after a peaceful evening, it might not be your best bet. Still, with all the special offers like fish and chips for a fiver on Fridays or cheap curries, it's a solid choice for a night out with friends, as long as you go in with realistic expectations and keep an eye on those opening times.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely brilliant – always friendly and helpful, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • They've got a cracking selection of beers, from cask ales to craft varieties, all well-priced and perfect for a proper pint.
  • The food is spot on, with classic dishes, stone-baked pizzas, and even superb vegan options, plus great deals like curry nights or kids' meals.
  • It's a lively spot for entertainment, with live sports on Sky and BT, quiz nights, and live music that keep things buzzing.
  • Family-friendly vibes with child and dog-friendly policies, plus disabled access, making it welcoming for everyone.
  • The atmosphere is cosy and fun, ideal for catching up with mates over a drink in the beer garden or by the pool table.
Cons
  • There can be some frustrations with the rooms, like only one key for multiple guests or shared bathrooms that might not suit everyone.
  • It gets a bit noisy at times, which can make it hard to chat properly, especially if you're after a quiet catch-up.
  • Occasionally, there are hitches with services, such as staff changing the TV channel on you, which might spoil watching the footy.
  • Food service stops fairly early in the evening, so if you're out late, you might miss out on a proper meal.
  • The overall experience can vary, with some recent feedback suggesting it's not always consistent, particularly for overnight stays.

Stayed over for one night. The pub looks very cosy and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Thanks to Sandra she made sure my late check out went smoothly. I would drop by for another beer if im in town for sure ⭐

We paid almost 140 pounds per night for a 3 single-bed room with a shared bathroom. Despite there being 3 of us, they told us there was only one key that we'd have to share. This is not acceptable for a room that is advertising itself as bookable for up to 3 adults, as there should be one key per adult just like in any other hotel. To their credit, they told us that during the opening hours we could go to the bar and ask to be let in with the master key, or that if it's an emergency we could call the owner after hours and she could come and let us in, but this is not a sufficient solution in my opinion. If they really can only give out one key, this needs to be clearly advertised in the listing. P.S. The reviews of the hotel are clearly getting skewed upwards because these reviews include both ones of the hotel and ones of the pub by itself. Hopefully people read the reviews closely when deciding whether to book.

Went in today, we arrived at 11.15am asked if they would put my football game on, which was on at 12.30, they said will you be staying for food and drink we said yes, they said no problem will put your game on. We had about 3 drinks each just ordered food, then they said sorry turning the game over, the staff where really rude, and laughing because we had ordered food, we asked to cancel the order, which they denied, so we left and found a better pub. Would not recommend this pub, and to be honest some of the locals where saying that's out of order, and the new management are very poor.

Another place for a drink. No doubt fun place for friends and having get together. Pool table, beer garden and nice atmosphere but not for everyone. For me it was bit noisy even i can’t talk to my partner who was sitting next to me. Anyhow good for big groups as they have plenty of space to accommodate.

The rooms are good for one or two nights if you have a day/night out in Manchester and you're not planning on spending much time in there. Small and basic but had everything we needed. Comfy, clean bed. Bear in mind that bathrooms are separate but there's one on each floor (so you'll be sharing with others. This wasn't a problem as there's not many people on each floor) The pub was a lot nicer than expected. It's great that you can roll out of bed and straight downstairs for breakfast (Decent full English and discount for guests) or have a quick drink before heading out. I did hear that one of the rooms didn't have blinds or curtains which could make for a difficult night's sleep. Bring ear plugs just incase. One side is quiet but our side was slightly noisy but was to be expected as Psych fest was on (which we attended and was great) we still managed to sleep quite well. The location is great! Really central and has a few bars nearby. There's a really nice brunch place across the road where they do good bloody Mary's. I'd definitely stay here again, it was great for the price and location. Cheap and cheerful
