About This Pub

Oh, what a lovely spot The Cross Keys Inn is – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a second home, you know? From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food really steals the show; folks rave about the homemade pasta, burgers, and that Sunday carvery that's spot on for a proper roast. The team behind the bar and in the kitchen are absolute stars, always on hand with a friendly word and top-notch service that leaves you grinning. It's tucked away in a charming village, close to some cracking walks and sights like Calke Abbey, so it's perfect if you're after a pint and a bite after a day out. Prices are gentle on the wallet too, which is always a win. But, to keep it real, there have been a few niggles here and there, like the odd mistake with drinks orders, so you might want to keep an eye on that when you're at the bar. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for a get-together with mates or a quiet evening – I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, as the good far outweighs the minor hiccups.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food here is absolutely spot on – think hearty homemade dishes, a cracking carvery on Thursdays and Sundays, and even specials that hit the mark every time.
  • Staff are so welcoming and friendly; they make you feel right at home from the moment you walk in, always ready with a smile and a chat.
  • It's a proper traditional village pub with a cosy atmosphere, complete with cask ales, lagers, ciders, and wines to suit all tastes.
  • Brilliant location near Calke Abbey and Staunton Harold, making it ideal for a pit stop after exploring, and it's easy to get to from the M1 or A42.
  • Rooms available if you fancy staying over, with en-suites and Wi-Fi, all at an inexpensive price point – perfect for a cheeky getaway.
Cons
  • There have been occasional slip-ups with orders, like getting a plain lager instead of a shandy, so it's worth double-checking to avoid any mix-ups.
  • Opening hours can be a bit limited, especially on Mondays and Tuesdays when it's only open in the evening, which might not suit everyone.

Popped into this lovely pub after visiting Calke Abbey. Didn’t know the area but saw the signs for the pub and very glad we found it. From the moment we went in the staff were friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable with any questions I asked. The pub is nicely decorated with a tv and pool table too. We didn’t go outside but from what I saw from the window it looked clean and nice. The waitress who took our order was pleasant and helpful and the food arrived promptly. (We were first in at 5pm) The food was perfect and very tasty, proper home cooked not microwaved. I had the veggie sausage and mash with lashings of gravy, my daughter the cheese and tomato pizza. I then had the sponge pudding for dessert. Which was amazing. The service was 10/10 my daughter even knocked over some of her drink and they refilled it for me which I appreciated. The toilets were also nice which sometimes in pubs it can go unnoticed. Overall a great place to eat, child friendly, clean, great food and to service. I’d recommend it.

It was very busy, and the food was good. But I ordered a half pint larger shandy and they bought me half pint larger. I wasn't sure and asked them to check and yes the answer came back its a shandy. When the bill came it's half a larger and my husband refused to let me share our long drive home.
