About This Pub
Ah, The George & Dragon – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem, tucked away in the heart of Leicestershire. I've got to say, the food really stands out; their home-cooked dishes with fresh, local ingredients are a delight, whether you're tucking into a massive pizza, a hearty Yorkshire toastie, or even some vegan fajitas that folks rave about. The staff are an absolute treat too – always so welcoming and attentive, making you feel right at ease, which is perfect for a casual catch-up or a family outing in that lovely enclosed garden with bouncy castles for the kids. And let's not forget the pints; a good Bass goes down a storm. On the flip side, though, it's not all perfect – I've heard a few tales of smaller portions on busy roast days, and some specials can sell out quick, so you might need to plan ahead. Overall, it's a solid choice for a relaxed meal or celebration, as long as you keep expectations realistic and maybe avoid peak times if you're fussy about the details. I'd definitely pop in again, but I'd keep an eye on those portions just to be safe!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely spot on – think delicious home-cooked meals with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and they've got a cracking variety including pizzas, specials like that Yorkshire toastie, and even vegan options that hit the mark.
-
The staff are top-notch; they're super friendly, welcoming, and really go out of their way to make you feel at home, which makes for a relaxed and enjoyable visit.
-
It's a brilliant spot for families or groups, with a lovely enclosed garden for al fresco dining, a kids' menu, and even summer bouncy castles to keep little ones entertained.
-
They serve a proper pint of ale, like Bass, and the overall atmosphere is warm and inviting, perfect for a midweek meal or a special occasion in the Leicestershire countryside.
-
Prices are moderate, so you get great value for hearty portions most of the time, making it an affordable treat without breaking the bank.
Cons
-
Portion sizes can be a bit hit or miss, especially on busy days like Sundays when the roasts might not live up to the hype, leaving you wanting more veg or sides.
-
Some specials are limited in availability, so if you're set on trying something specific, you might end up disappointed if it's run out.
-
While most visits are positive, there have been a few inconsistent experiences, like service hiccups or meals that didn't quite match previous glowing reviews.
-
Bookings can get tricky for popular times; if you're trying to sort something last-minute or for events like Mother's Day, you might need to call rather than book online, which could be a faff.

Great place for good food. Staff are superb, really look after you. Extensive menu but the pizzas are exceptional. Plus, it serves a good pint of Bass
A group of ten of us had a table for lunch and enjoyed the good verity of food and the staff were very helpful
We love coming here for a nice meal. The portions are great, staff are so friendly and welcoming. We've never had a bad meal here, it's always reliably lovely!
Went for a Sunday roast as family had been before and gave glowing review. Unfortunately this visit wasn’t as favourable. 5 of us had a roast meal, two of which were large 2 roast meals. We were given 2 small bowls of veg and one bowl of cauliflower cheese between the 5 of us. When asked how the cauliflower cheese is supposed to be portioned for 5 we were told we are given one bowl free, no matter how many people are ordering and any additional have to be charged for. This is not stated on the menu, so to ensure you all have sufficient, make sure you all order separately- by their logic you should then have plenty of cauliflower cheese!
Lovely food at excellent prices, nicely decorated, great staff and service. A good choice for groups with mixed dietary requirements, I had the best vegan fajitas and vegan chocolate cake ever and will absolutely be coming back!
