About This Pub
Ah, Gelsmoor – it's one of those places that just feels like a proper local gem, doesn't it? I've got to say, the steak on a stone is a real highlight; it's such a clever idea, letting you cook it just how you like, and the flavours are spot on from what everyone's raving about. The staff are usually brilliant too, all smiles and on top of things, making you feel right at home in that warm, welcoming atmosphere. It's brilliant for a casual lunch or dinner, with options like the early bird menu offering great value, and the pizzas and pies looking tempting as anything. On the flip side, though, some of the sides can be a letdown – think underwhelming peas or sauce that doesn't quite deliver – and if you're after generous portions, you might leave wanting a bit more. Service isn't always flawless; there've been a few tales of mix-ups that could sour the experience. Still, overall, it's a solid choice for a night out, and I'd pop in again for that steak alone, as long as I keep expectations realistic for the rest.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The steak on a stone is an absolute winner – it's a fun, interactive way to enjoy a top-notch meal, and from what I've heard, it's one of the best in the Midlands.
-
The service is generally spot on; the team is friendly, efficient, and really makes you feel welcome, especially with their courteous approach.
-
It's got a cosy, inviting atmosphere that's perfect for a relaxed get-together, with plenty of parking and an easy-to-find location.
-
They offer great value options like the early bird menu, and the overall food quality shines through in dishes like the pies and pizzas.
-
The place keeps things fresh with regular updates and a solid drinks menu, including wines and cocktails to suit all tastes.
Cons
-
Some of the sides can be a bit disappointing, like the peas or peppercorn sauce that didn't quite hit the mark for a few folks.
-
Portions might feel a tad small for those with a bigger appetite, though it's probably kinder on the waistline.
-
Service can occasionally be average, with mix-ups like the wrong dish turning up, which puts a slight dampener on things.
-
No dogs allowed inside except for assistance ones, so it's not ideal if you're popping in with your furry friend.
-
Certain items, like the onion rings, might not live up to expectations and feel a bit like they're from the freezer aisle.

We were taken here by friends who live in Ashby.
Service was very efficient and professional. Serving staff use tablets to record your order which is checked.
Our serving staff were Chloe and Leyla. For non-full time staff they were extremely courteous and very efficient.
Food was well presented and delicious.
I ordered rump steak cooked on a hot stone; the cheapest cut of steak on offer but absolutely tender (no chewy fat or gristle) served with 3x cooked chips and a side of veg.
Other meals were skewered chicken and a steak & ale pie. All were ample sized and very well presented and tasty.
There is not a very good variety of beers, in fact it was all pression served lagers, a craft beer and Guinness. Wines were good.
Went April 2025 with my partner. We both had the steak, which was fine (hot stones is a great concept). Fries were good, but the peas and peppercorn sauce were both disappointing.
Ordered a side of onion rings, and they were dreadful. Exactly like Iceland sell and confident that these were bought in.
Service was good, atmosphere mixed (sat us near a children's party when there were plenty of spare tables near the window). Also, really weird that we're in a restaurant but they've got TVs on the wall, which were just running the TV screensavers. Just odd.
Definitely not a 4.6 rated restaurant.
This is how pubs should do pie! Absolutely brilliant. Service bang average highlighted on there with 7 guests and a wrong pizza came out but would not leave it for us all (for free) they missed a nice tip which would of been far more than the pizza !
The food was fantastic—served promptly, piping hot, and cooked to perfection. I enjoyed every bite! The atmosphere was cosy and inviting, with a lovely homely charm. Highly recommend!
Had a lovely lunch today. Staff friendly and food was really enjoyable: Tasted good and it was well presented, if not a massive portion (better for waistlines though). The pizzas looked amazing too and I'll try one next time. Didn't have dessert. Great meeting place, easy to find, lots of parking and space inside plus outside seats available.
