About This Pub
Ah, The Cross Keys – what a gem of a pub tucked away near Covent Garden. I have to say, it's one of those places that really captures the spirit of old London, with its Grade II listed building from 1848 and walls absolutely crammed with fascinating memorabilia from the 60s music scene, particularly the Beatles. If you're a fan, it's like a little pilgrimage spot! The beer choices are brilliant too, always a solid selection that keeps things interesting without overwhelming you, and on a good day, the staff are dead chatty and make you feel right at home. The atmosphere is just lovely – that mellow music in the background means you can actually have a proper conversation with your mates over a drink. But let's be honest, it's not perfect; I've heard from a few folks that it can look a bit tired and neglected at times, which is a shame for such a historic spot. Service can be hit or miss, with some saying the bar team aren't always as attentive, and if you're keen on real ale, you might find it's not available, which is a bit of a letdown. Still, for anyone wandering around the West End, it's worth popping in for that authentic pub feel – just go in with an open mind and you'll likely have a great time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
It's got a wonderful traditional vibe with walls full of pictures and signed memorabilia from 60s bands, especially the Beatles – makes you feel like you're stepping back in time.
-
The beer selection is spot on, offering something for everyone, whether you're after a classic pint or something a bit different.
-
The staff are generally friendly and welcoming, which really adds to the cosy atmosphere.
-
The music is mellow and just right, creating a relaxed space where you can actually chat without shouting over the noise.
Cons
-
It can sometimes feel a bit run-down or care-worn, which takes away from the charm if you're expecting a spotless spot.
-
The service isn't always as engaging as it could be, with staff occasionally coming across as disinterested.
-
Real ale might not always be on offer, which could disappoint if that's what you're specifically after.
-
The toilets have been described as a tad quirky or not up to scratch, though that's pretty common in some older pubs.

A really lovely traditional pub. Good choice of beers and friendly bar staff. Great pics and signed memorabilia famous 60s artists and bands adorn the walls.
As the look from outside was so amazing, inside was even better... full carpet, beer selection for everyone, music sooo melow you dont want to leave and if you are Beatles fan... YOU HAVE TO be here. There is "Beatles wall of fame"... toilets are bit funny, but most of pubs have funny toilets ;D. I loved it. Meantime brewery beer... amazing, and beer is cheap!!! I shall be back, if I find my way back :D:D:D.
At one time this was a great London pub. On our visit yesterday it was pretty filthy and care-worn. The bar staff were completely disinterested and there was no real ale on pump. My advice is to keep walking and don't judge our great London pubs by this shoddy example.
🚇 Covent Garden
🍺 £6.50 Madri
The Cross Keys is located close to Neal’s Yard in Covent Garden in the West End of London. The nearest Tube is Covent Garden, it’s a few minutes walk to get here.
This Grade II listed Freehouse was built in 1848. The pub’s small and striking exterior is famous for its floral displays and foliage. This pub is owned by an antique and memorabilia collector and is the Sister pub to the Old Coffee House in Soho.
The interior of this pub is long and narrow, dimly lit and has bags of character. The servery is located on the right hand side, is clad in dark wood and has a brass foot rail. The decor is a treasure trove of all manner of memorabilia and bric-a-brac, you’ll find copper kettles to musical instruments, Brewery Mirrors and historical photos. There are also Beatles posters and even a signed napkin by Elvis Presley. The seating is plentiful throughout the bar, there are small spot stools and elongated comfy banquettes with small circular tables to rest your pint on. Oh, and not forgetting the proper pub carpet.
The beer line was a solid mix of mainstream, premium, craft and cask beers. I decided on a Madri, my pint was decent enough, price point was above average. Food comes in the form of a choice of Baguettes, all of which will set you back £4.50, there is also bags of Tayto’s too.
I arrived around 11.30am on a rainy Wednesday lunchtime in February. The pub was fairly quiet with a few locals and tourist spread around the bar. The low lights and the decor make for a very atmospheric setting, a feeling of a London pub from times gone by. The service was great, the chap who served me was welcoming and chatty.
The Cross Keys is one of those pubs that you immediately feel at home and comfortable in. I loved everything about this pub and could have spent all day here. Next time you are exploring the West End or if you’re looking for a pre or post show pub, may I recommend a visit to this quintessentially British London Boozer.

What a fabulous old pub. Well decorated for Christmas but also a fine collection of memorability, esp of the Beatles.
Good selection of beers. Friendly staff. And lots of local patrons. Loved that the background music was just that, no shouting to make yourself heard. Just a pleasant babble of conversation.
This now our favourite Central London pub.
