About This Pub

Ah, the Nags Head in Covent Garden is one of those timeless London spots that just draws you in with its rich history – it's been around since the 1670s, you know, and the building's a proper listed gem. From what I've gathered from folks who've been, the food's a real highlight; those pies are legendary, packed with flavour and paired with sides that make for a satisfying meal, ideal if you're grabbing something before heading to the theatre. The team there are dead helpful and quick on their feet, which makes the whole experience feel effortless and enjoyable. It's got that cosy pub feel with plenty of space, whether you fancy sitting outside with a drink or tucking into a table upstairs. On the flip side, it might not be the best for families every time, as there have been a few grumbles about entry policies, and while the prices are fair for the area, they can sneak up on you in such a central location. All things considered, it's a solid choice for a good night out – you'll leave with a smile, but maybe keep an eye on the little details to make it just right for your group.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot-on, with standout dishes like their steak and ale pie – tender beef, perfect mash, and rich gravy that really hits the spot.
  • Service is friendly and attentive, making you feel right at home, whether you're popping in for a quick bite or settling in for the evening.
  • It's in a prime spot in Covent Garden, just across from the tube, so it's super convenient for a pre-theatre meal or a wander around the shops.
  • The historic building has a cosy, welcoming atmosphere, with options for upstairs dining, downstairs pub vibes, and even outdoor seating on nicer days.
  • It's dog-friendly and great for groups, with private hire options that make it ideal for birthdays or casual get-togethers.
Cons
  • There can be occasional issues with entry for younger visitors, so it's worth checking ahead if you're with family to avoid any surprises.
  • Some dishes, like the prawn cocktail, are a bit standard and don't wow you, feeling more everyday than exceptional.
  • Prices are moderate for central London, which means they can add up quickly if you're not watching the bill, especially for a full meal and drinks.

Popped in for a bite before getting the train home, the service was fast and friendly, the food was lovely and there was a great atmosphere.

The best meat pie I've ever had. The steak & ale pie was full of tender chunks of beef. Gravy & mash were just perfect. I was able to add a side of carrots & parnsips as well, which made me very happy. We didn’t have any room for dessert on this visit - maybe next time. Service was quick and attentive.

Well after being turned away with Panda Jr (u18) it was a welcome relief for two weary travellers to flop down in the plush seats and cosy environs of a famously named pub (even if it isn't off of only fools). They have a kids menu and for central London the prices almost bordered on reasonable. This makes it a must visit if you're in need of refreshment in these parts. A clean well lit interior awaits, plenty tables and chairs, and bar staff who are polite, friendly, and knowledgeable. We're happy to answer questions and check for answers to one's they couldn't answer. Hats off to the landlord - they have a well trained team. Food wise the portions are immense and my poor little soldier was defeated by the kids fish chips and peas. I tackled a decent pie that was really rather good. Pint of the house lager and I can confirm it's a decent enough drop. All in all I am very happy to recommend this place and will return next time I'm in the area.

Me and my family booked a table here before we went to the theatre. The staff were lovely and very attentive. I had the trio of pie's and they were lovely, the cheddar cheese, potato and leek pie was my favourite and I loved the gravy. The prawn cocktail was pretty standard but the tomato and basil soup was lovely and so was the sourdough crumpet rarebit. Me and my mother in law enjoyed the pinot grigio and me and my daughter had a perfect pornstar martini.

Visited for an early pre-theatre dinner, the central location in Covent Garden just across from the underground station makes The Nags Head perfect for this. We were seated upstairs in the dining room and table service was provided. We ordered the fish and chips and a pie. Meals arrived quickly and were very good. The drinks selection is extensive and has something for everyone. It got increasingly busy over the course of the evening and walk-ins were being turned away so I'd suggest making a reservation like we did. Keep in mind there is a £10 deposit if you reserve online and they credit this against your bill, just be sure to check this as initially they didn't include it and we had to get it adjusted, they were very apologetic and I think it was an honest mistake. All in all an enjoyable traditional pub experience in the heart of the action. Would recommend!
