About This Pub

Ah, The Boardroom in Carlisle is one of those classic pubs that really hits the spot for a laid-back evening out. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the place has this lovely, homely feel that makes you want to settle in for a chat and a drink – it's all about that authentic British pub charm. The beers stand out as a real winner; folks rave about the Wye Valley HPA and how well it's served, and there are other local ales that add to the appeal. Plus, with trivia nights hosted by a friendly chap like Dave, it's a great way to dive into some light-hearted fun and meet a few locals. Being smack in the historic part of town, near the Cathedral and museums, it's an ideal pitstop if you're out and about sightseeing. On the downside, though, it's a bit of a letdown when it comes to food – you're basically stuck with crisps, so if hunger strikes, you might need to head elsewhere. A couple of people have noted the beer not always being at its coolest and the pub getting uncomfortably warm, which could spoil the mood on a busy night. And while the staff are generally alright, they don't always go the extra mile to make you feel extra special. All in all, it's a solid choice for a casual get-together or a quiet drink, especially if you're after that genuine local experience without the frills – just remember to manage your expectations if you're looking for more than pints and chat.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is wonderfully warm and welcoming, making it feel like a proper local spot where you can relax and unwind.
  • They've got a great selection of beers, like the superb Wye Valley HPA, which comes highly recommended for its quality.
  • The staff and hosts are friendly and engaging, with events like trivia nights adding a fun touch to the evening.
  • It's conveniently located in Carlisle's historic quarter, near the Cathedral and other attractions, perfect for a quick stop after exploring.
Cons
  • Food options are pretty limited, with only chips or crisps on offer, so it might not satisfy if you're after a proper meal.
  • Some folks have mentioned the beer can be warm and the pub gets a bit too hot, which can put a damper on things.
  • The bar staff aren't always the chattiest, and a few have come across as a tad dour, missing that extra spark.
  • The quiz nights can be quite focused on local knowledge, which might not be as enjoyable if you're not from around Carlisle.

If you're looking for a local pub experience, this is the spot! Dave was a great host & invited us to participate in the trivia night. I highly recommend you check it out! (The only food is chips/crisps)

You will find the pub in the historic quarter of Carlisle, not far from the Castle, and Tullie House Museum, you can't miss it, it's next to the Cathedral. I was at the pub in the afternoon, so it was extremely quiet. If you want a quiet drink with the girlfriend, then this is where to go. On a night time though, it does get busier, and on a Wednesday night there is a Quiz. The bar is well stocked. Prices are comparable with other establishments. The pud is small, to medium sized and is, very atmospheric, because of its old dark panelling. Though the pub is in the opposite direction to all the other pubs, you will still find people there on a night time, so give it a go. I don't know if the pub sells food.

A great, traditional pub. The Wye Valley HPA was superbly served, so much so that I didn't investigate the Black Sheep Blonde that was also on hand pump (further down the bar on the left). Very polite landlord, and a pub I would take a detour to patronise.

Old style public house which is next to Cathedral. Very warm and welcoming atmosphere. Service is not bad either. Serving local ales and some bottles as well as spirits.

Warm beer, no food, boiling hot pub and dour bar staff combined to make our visit disappointing. We went for the quiz which was really for intelligent Carlisle folk who had knowledge of local restaurants/football and not the fun quiz we expected.
