About This Pub

You know, I had a wander into the Crown & Mitre Hotel in Carlisle recently, and it's got this wonderful old-world charm that really draws you in – think sweeping staircases and a cosy log fire that makes you feel right at home. It's perfectly placed in the city centre, so you're never far from a good pub crawl or some tasty eateries, and the rooms are generally spacious with nice touches like a swimming pool and sauna for a bit of pampering. Folks seem to enjoy the breakfast when it's firing on all cylinders, and that secure parking is a lifesaver. But, let's be honest, it's not without its flaws; some areas look a tad worn and could do with a spruce-up, the mattresses aren't the comfiest for a solid night's sleep, and the staff vary – some are absolute gems, while others might not go the extra mile. All in all, it's a solid choice if you're after a blend of history and convenience, just keep in mind it blends the good with a bit of the not-so-good, so you'll get a balanced experience without any surprises.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's got that lovely Edwardian grandeur with beautiful original features like a real log fire, making the place feel warm and welcoming right from the off.
  • The location is spot on, right in the heart of Carlisle, which makes it a breeze to pop out for a pint or explore the local scene.
  • Rooms are generally spacious and comfy, with some modern perks like free electric charging points and even a swimming pool and sauna to relax in.
  • Breakfast can be absolutely brilliant when it's on form, and the bar meals, like a good steak pie, hit the spot for a hearty feed.
  • Secure parking is included, which is a real bonus in a busy city centre, and it's all free for guests.
Cons
  • Some rooms feel a bit dated and haven't seen a fresh coat of paint in years, so they don't quite live up to the hotel's grand history.
  • Staff can be hit or miss – a few are really helpful, but others come across as unhelpful or not as friendly as you'd hope.
  • The mattresses are on the basic side, with springs you can feel, which might leave you tossing and turning instead of getting a proper rest.
  • Breakfast isn't always up to scratch; it's pretty average at times, so you might not be wowed every morning.
  • You could end up lugging your bags up the stairs if assistance isn't on hand, which isn't ideal after a long journey.

Absolutely amazing here, the breakfast was awesome, the room was beautiful and comfy, the swimming pool and sauna was brilliant. Could not be happier with the hotel at all. Front desk people could have been friendlier, and I was also told to take my huge case up the stairs whilst the concierge ferried non-present guests luggage in the elevator for 30+ mins... Would have been 5 star allround otherwise

It's not really 4* but 3 felt a bit mean. It looks like it was really posh once. These days they seem to do a very good job with the money they have. Our room was in the main building and, while I don't think it has seen a paint brush for many years, it was in good condition and the bed was large and comfortable with nice pillows. The bathroom was similarly clean and in good condition and things worked properly. The staff are helpful and pleasant.

Perfectly located for the centre of Carlisle. Room was decent size for a standard double (in the annex). Had a bar meal (steak pie) which was good. Breakfast was pretty average. A few staff were pleasant and helpful but the rest were pretty unhelpful and didn't seem to think customer satisfaction was a priority.

Short one night stay on our road trip south. Despite the regeneration building work going on throughout city center, this hotel was ideally placed for bars and restaurants. Staff friendly, secure parking included and although a little small, our room was clean, well laid out and had a modern feel to it despite the hotel being an older building. Bonus points for USB points at both sides of the bed and for the walk in shower with both traditional shower or rainfall. Big tv and coffee making facilities including biscuits. Didnt use the pool facilities or restaurant but room service also available. Would definitely stay again.

I’ve been to this hotel on 3 separate occasions now. This hotel is beautiful, there are some really stunning features. However, the rooms are super dated, the mattresses are basic I feel they can improve this by adding a down mattress layer. You can feel the springs when you lay on it. The pillows are average too. The bathroom does seem clean which for me is most important, but it’s just so dated. I understand it can be difficult to renovate but I would always stay in this hotel, its not the fanciest or the comfiest but overall it’s such an amazing location close to so much, they have a chocolatier a local farmers style market store, the Carlisle Castle, high street and restaurants/takeaways. Decent prices for what you get and the hotel has huge potential.
