About This Pub

Ah, The Black Swan in Rixton – it's one of those places that just feels like a proper escape from the hustle, tucked away in a picturesque spot not far from Manchester. I've got to say, the food steals the show; their traditional home-cooked dishes are done to a high standard, with options that cater to everyone, including the kids, and it's all served in a relaxed, friendly setting that's been the heart of the community for over 300 years. The outdoor area is brilliant for families, with play equipment to keep the youngsters happy, and it's a bonus that dogs are made to feel welcome with treats and nearby walks – makes it easy to pop in after a stroll. On top of that, they've got boutique rooms if you're staying over, which adds a nice touch for a weekend away. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect; I've heard a few tales of service being a bit off, like staff not being as attentive or forgetting the little things, which can leave you feeling a smidge overlooked in a busy moment. Still, with such a solid overall vibe and mostly positive experiences from folks who've been there, I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're after a laid-back pub outing – just keep your expectations in check for those quieter service moments, and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food here is absolutely spot on – think hearty, home-cooked classics that really hit the mark, with plenty of options for the whole family.
  • It's a fantastic spot for families, with a lovely outdoor play area to keep the little ones entertained while you relax.
  • They're super dog-friendly, offering treats and even special rooms for furry friends, plus it's in a great area for walks.
  • The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, perfect for catching up with mates or hosting events, and the staff are often friendly and helpful.
Cons
  • Service can sometimes fall short, like when a waiter isn't as attentive or forgets to offer the dessert menu, which puts a bit of a dampener on things.
  • It can get quite busy, especially in the evenings, making it feel a tad overwhelming or leading to slower service at times.

I was in The Black Swan last Thursday 5th June. The meal and surroundings were excellent. This review would have been 5 stars but for the attitude of the waitress. She was inattentive and less than friendly to us and the next table. We were never offered the dessert menu and had to ask for coffee. By contrast the young waiter serving a different table was friendly, chatty and attentive. It rather spoilt the evening.

Lovely place to have something to eat and catch up with friends and family. Also a great outdoor area for everyone to enjoy, lots of play equipment to entertain the children. Staff are friendly and welcoming.

This is the first time visiting the Black Swan. I was very impressed with it. The pub is very popular and was getting quite busy as we left. The Sunday lunch was very good and the staff were very patient with us. There is a car park and accessible to wheelchair users. There is a play area for children and a fenced off duck pond. You also get blue light card discount. We will definitely be coming back. There is also a hotel here.
