About This Pub
Ah, the Black Dog Inn in Dalton-in-Furness is one of those hidden gems that really hits the spot for a proper pub experience. Tucked away in the lovely Cumbrian countryside, it's got that classic feel with rustic beams and a fire crackling away on chilly evenings, making it just the place to unwind with a pint of their excellent ales or a cheeky gin. The team there are genuinely caring, like Joshua and the others who've been mentioned, always checking in and making sure you're comfortable – it's that personal touch that sets it apart. The food doesn't disappoint either; their burgers are a standout, packed with flavour and served up with a smile, and at such reasonable prices, it's hard to go wrong. They've got live music nights and that fun Dog Fest event, which adds a lively twist and brings the community together. On the downside, though, the hours wrap up pretty early, so if you're hoping for a long evening session, you might find yourself heading home sooner than expected. Plus, with the menu leaning heavily on burgers, it could feel a bit limited if you're in the mood for something different. All things considered, it's a top choice for a relaxed day out or a stay in their comfy rooms, especially if you fancy escaping the hustle and bustle – just keep those early closures in mind for planning your visit.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely brilliant, always going the extra mile to make you feel welcome and looked after, just like chatting with old mates.
-
The atmosphere is spot on – think cosy log fires in winter and a lovely decked terrace for soaking up the sun in summer, perfect for a relaxed pint.
-
Food's a real winner, especially their burgers which folks rave about as some of the best they've had, and it's all at affordable prices.
-
They've got a cracking selection of drinks, from award-winning ales to wines and gins, plus fun events like live music and the annual Dog Fest that add a bit of buzz.
-
It's a great value spot with comfortable rooms if you're staying over, making it ideal for a countryside getaway without breaking the bank.
Cons
-
Opening hours are a tad limited, typically from 3 PM to 8 PM, so it might not suit late-night outings or spontaneous visits.
-
The menu can feel a bit restricted, with evening meals mostly focusing on burgers, which might not excite everyone if you're after more variety.
-
Being out in the countryside means it's a bit remote, so getting there could be a hassle if you're not driving, and there haven't been many recent reviews to gauge the latest vibe.

My partner and I stayed here the night before our safari zoo experience (round the corner). Such a lovely experience! We were looked after by Joshua and Tom, they made us feel extremely welcome and couldn't do enough for us. Joshua is just genuinely so lovely and caring, constantly doing check backs. Tom is the chef and clearly very passionate about what he does, he made sure food quality and display was on point and personally communicated with us about our preferences, he even prepared a lovely breakfast table for us before breakfast hours because we had to leave super early. The table was perfection and so beautifuly set up.
Just overall a lovely personalised experience.
My only slight negative feedback is that the beds are not quite firm enough for me, and the heating went off during the night meaning it went a bit cold, so I woke up and struggled to get back to sleep. However, I am a bit fussy and this is probably just personal preference. I love a firm bed and warm room all through the night with the cold weather.
Fabulous place, rooms were beautifully presented and clean and comfortable, had a gorgeous little terrace off the room with views over the countryside. The food was exceptional. Evening meal is only burgers but I have to say they are one of the best burgers I have ever eaten, they do it well and stick to what they do well. Breakfast was amazing too. Lovely family run business and traditional county pub with real coal fires. Would definatly come back and very good value for money too. Staff were so super friendly and helpful made us really welcome. Added a nice touch when told it was my birthday stay a happy birthday banner and balloons were at at my table for breakfast was a lovely touch.
Second time we've stayed here. First time was in the rooms above the Inn and the second was at the cottage. It's a really gorgeous place and the staff seriously go above and beyond for you. We cannot recommend this place enough. Food is always delicious. Drinks are well priced. I have zero issues with The Black Dog Inn and cannot wait to revisit. I've added photos from inside the cottage.
Absolutely beautiful, cannot recommend enough. Stayed here for 3 nights and the rooms were amazing. Really comfy beds, lovely shower. Staff were incredible. Had the food here as well Friday night and immediately rebooked to have the food for the Saturday too.
Such a gem! Will be recommending it to everyone. The people here are lovely, the room is perfect and we just had the best stay. The inn is lovely and cosy, so you immediately feel at home.
Great value for money and the perfect position so that you’re in the middle of nowhere but still close to other amenities in the area.
I’m also convinced that the mirror they have in the room makes you look skinnier, so that in itself is a reason to visit.
