About This Pub

Oh, you know, I had a lovely time at The Bay Horse in Scholes the other day, and it's just one of those pubs that really hits the mark for a proper British outing. The food is what stands out most – everything's homemade, from the pies that are packed with flavour to those massive burgers and cod dishes that leave you feeling satisfied without breaking the bank. The staff are genuinely attentive and friendly, always up for a chat, which makes the whole place feel like a community hub rather than just another spot for a pint. It's brilliant for families or if you're out with the dog after a walk, as they welcome both with open arms. Plus, with a good range of local ales and gins on offer, it's easy to settle in for the evening. On the flip side, it does fill up quickly, so booking ahead is a must, especially if you're aiming for a weekend meal. And keep in mind, they're shut on Mondays and the kitchen closes early, which might not suit if you're after something spontaneous or late. All in all, it's a gem of a place that does the simple things brilliantly, and I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're in the Rotherham area – just plan accordingly for the best experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think homemade pies, juicy 8oz burgers, and massive battered cod that's perfect for a hearty meal.
  • It's got such a welcoming vibe, with friendly staff who make you feel right at home, whether you're popping in for a drink or a full meal.
  • Dog-friendly and family-oriented, making it ideal for a stroll in the countryside followed by a relaxing pint and some grub.
  • They've got a great selection of local cask ales and gins, plus it's at the heart of the community with fun events like quiz nights.
  • Reasonable prices mean you get brilliant value, and the historic building adds a lovely touch of character to your visit.
Cons
  • It can get pretty busy, especially on weekends, so you'll want to book a table in advance to avoid disappointment.
  • They're closed all day on Mondays, which might cramp your plans if that's your only day off.
  • The kitchen shuts early – last orders at 7:30pm on weekdays – so it's not the spot for a late-night bite.
  • With no specific price level listed, it might feel a bit unpredictable if you're watching your budget, though reviews suggest it's fair.

Visited here on Sunday for s family birthday party. Excellent food and service. The staff were attentive and friendly. Beautiful building, but the star of the afternoon was the food, couldn't fault it. I even had 2 desserts as I couldn't decide between the sticky toffee sponge and the raspberry cheesecake...they were both incredible (just need a nap now). Thanks to all the staff especially the kitchen team. Many thanks

Such a cozy spot with delicious food! The atmosphere is super warm and inviting, and everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. It’s the perfect place for a chill meal or date night. Just make sure to book a reservation ahead of time, it fills up quickly, especially on weekends!

Lovely little pub, very homely and welcoming. The pies are homemade and are out of this world. The bar area is also dog friendly with water bowls, treats and cushions available, and the staff were very nice with our Lab.

Gorgeous little village pub, pays to book to be on the safe side as its very popular but we were early so there was plenty of room for us. Been here a couple of times now and have never been disappointed with the food. Everything is homemade including the desserts. This time both my parter and I had the steak pie with veg and chips. The pie is always full of filling and the pastry is lovely, with a jug of gravy on the side. The staff are lovely and told us about their takeaway cheesecakes when we said how full we were. Would be rude not to so we took a slice of rocky road cheesecake home and wow! Just as amazing as the meals. Definitely one of our favourite local places to eat. Update - been back again and tried the Pie of the Week, which was minted lamb and potato. It was delicious, well worth a try. We were too full for dessert again but took home a bit of mint choc chip cheesecake, which also did not disappoint! Also brought friends who also can't wait to go back to try more on the menu.
