About This Pub
Ah, The Alexandra Tavern – it's one of those gems in Norwich that just feels like a second home, you know? From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got this brilliant old-style charm with a fantastic range of beers on tap, and they're spot on with keeping them fresh and tasty. The food's another highlight; folks are raving about dishes like the chestnut sofrito and those warming casseroles, which sound like proper comfort grub without breaking the bank. The atmosphere is just lovely – it's welcoming and easy-going, perfect for nipping in for a quiet drink or striking up a conversation with the regulars. Service-wise, the staff come across as genuinely friendly and helpful, which always makes a big difference on a night out. On the flip side, though, the website's a bit of a letdown; it didn't load for me, so you might struggle to check menus or events online. It's very much a local haunt, which is great if you're in the area, but could feel a bit cliquey if you're just passing through. And with last orders at 11 PM, it's not the place for those epic late sessions. Overall, it's a solid choice for a relaxed evening – I'd say give it a go if you're after good value and a friendly buzz, but keep in mind it might not suit everyone for a bigger night out.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beer selection is brilliant – especially those hand-pumped bitters, which are always well-kept and full of flavour.
-
The food hits the spot; think delicious options like chestnut sofrito or a hearty Spanish-style casserole, all served with a smile.
-
It's got that classic, welcoming atmosphere where you can easily chat with friendly locals or just relax with a pint.
-
The staff are top-notch, making everyone feel right at home with their patient and attentive service.
-
Outdoor seating is a lovely touch, particularly in the summer when it gets buzzing and adds to the community feel.
Cons
-
The website's a bit unreliable – it timed out on me, so it's not the easiest place to get more info online.
-
As a proper local spot, it might feel a tad exclusive if you're not a regular, keeping things more for the neighbourhood crowd.
-
It closes at 11 PM, which is a bit early if you're after a late-night session.

Proper local pub. Best one in Norwich in my opinion. I don't want to go on about it too much, cos it's ours and we want to keep it local.
Literally just eaten the chestnut sofrito followed by warm choc brownie and cream. Sooooo good. Great service delicious tasty food
The couple of pints of hand-pumped bitter I had were very enjoyable - well kept and tasty. The barman patiently let me sample a couple til I found the one I liked. The Spanish style casserole of belly pork, choritzo and whitbeans, in a plentiful thick and well spicy gravy, was delicious. We did have to wait a long while for the food, but the pub was packed, and there was nary a ping to be heard. Proper home cooked food. The food cost less than a tenner - off the specials board, and there were more I would have liked to try. My daughter had a spicy vegetable stew. I had a taste and wouldn't have minded that myself.. I will certainly return on a future visit to Norwich.
Very good old style pub, great atmosphere and good selection of beers on hand pump. Cheese and ham rolls on the bar. Friendly service.
Classic pub. I drink here regularly. The staff and customers are friendly and welcoming. It’s the kind of pub where you can easily engage in conversation with people or just enjoy your own company.
You can sit outside all year but it’s summer when outside is really busy. There are two bars both comfortable and spacious with ample table space. It gets busy with food in the early evening but food is served from early afternoon until 19.00hrs with a great varied menu and a specials board showing soups, mains and desserts.
The variety of beers is very good with the selection changed regularly - the beers are kept well and the staff are happy to make recommendations. All in all an atmospheric pub that is well worth a visit.
