About This Pub
Oh, St Stephen's Tavern is one of those places that just feels like a proper London gem, doesn't it? Tucked away near Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, it's got this incredible historic vibe that's been drawing people in since 1875 – imagine popping in for a pint after a wander around the sights, and you can practically feel the stories in the air from all the politicians and locals who've graced its walls over the years. The food's generally spot on; their fish and chips are a standout, all golden and satisfying, paired with a great selection of beers that go down a treat. And the staff? Most of them are lovely and really make you feel at home, which is just what you want on a chilled-out evening. But, fair's fair, it can get absolutely heaving with tourists, so you might end up jostling for a table or waiting a bit longer than you'd like. Plus, while the grub's mostly brilliant, some bits can be a touch greasy, and there've been a few tales of staff not being at their best, like being a bit too vocal about other guests. All in all, it's a fantastic spot for a relaxed catch-up or a quick bite with mates, as long as you go in with realistic expectations for a busy city pub – I'd definitely recommend it for the atmosphere alone, but keep an eye out for those quieter times if you can.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The historic charm is absolutely spot on – it's like stepping back in time with its original features and that famous division bell, making it a real treat for anyone interested in London's heritage.
-
Location is brilliant, right in the heart of Westminster near Big Ben and Parliament, so you can enjoy a pint with stunning views, especially from the outdoor seating.
-
The food's a winner, particularly the fish and chips – folks rave about how tasty and crispy they are, and the drinks menu has some cracking options like their signature Badger beer.
-
Service is generally top-notch; servers are attentive and friendly, which really adds to the welcoming vibe of the place.
Cons
-
It can get pretty packed, especially being in a busy tourist spot, so you might have to queue or deal with a bit of a squeeze during peak times.
-
Some dishes, like the fish, have been noted as a tad greasy now and then, which might not sit well if you're after something lighter.
-
There have been a few mentions of inconsistent staff behaviour, with the odd instance of someone being a bit loud or unprofessional, which can put a damper on the experience.

Came into St Stephen’s on a whim while looking for a pub to kick back with a pint. We were attended quickly and efficiently. I really enjoyed the stout. The smell of fish and chips was so good we couldn’t resist putting in an order. The smell didn’t deceive! Jon was very attentive and nice as was all the bar staff. It was a great way to end our London trip!
This place was a wonderful spot to eat lunch 🥗 , but what made it even better was our server! We got fish and chips and they tasted great and the chips 🍟 were definitely better than McDonald’s for sure. Our group loved our server Andi 🤵🏻♂️who was nice to us even though we were American 🇺🇸 annoying tourists. He was fast to help 🏃 , friendly 🤩 , and accommodating to our allergies 🥜 . Give him a raise‼️💯🔥🇬🇧
Walked here after we did the Churchill War Rooms. Keep in mind, that it is right by very busy tourist areas, so it will be crowded. We sat upstairs and ordered Halloumi fries, Fish and Chips, and Sausage and Mash. The fish was a little greasy but the Sausage and Mash was great as were the Halloumi fries.
Lovely place to eat with and amazing view. Our food exceeded our expectations for a vary tourist area and our waiter was nice. The only downside was a very loud woman waiter who was talking bad about customers as they were leaving, this happened multiple times right next to us. Other then that it was a good experience.
Our second time here over 9 year period as a tourist, and it’s still a great place. It was even recommended by British friends as a must visit place when dropping into London.
Nothing beats sitting in their outside seatings looking at the parliament view. The beer and fish and chips were well worth it. Very friendly bartenders.
