About This Pub
Ah, The Clarence – it's one of those pubs that just gets British hospitality right, you know? Tucked away on Whitehall, it's got that classic historic feel with elegant decor that makes you feel like you're stepping into a bygone era, yet it's still buzzing with a lively, friendly energy. From what I've gathered from folks' chats, the food is where it really shines; whether it's the legendary fish and chips, hearty pies, or those mouthwatering Sunday roasts with all the trimmings, everything seems to hit the spot with fresh, quality ingredients that leave you satisfied. The drinks selection is spot on too, with proper real ales and fun seasonal options like spritzes to suit all tastes. Service-wise, it's all about that warm, efficient touch that makes you feel looked after without being over the top. On the flip side, it can get a bit heaving during busy hours, what with its location near the tourist spots, and the prices are on the moderate side, so it might not be the cheapest spot for a casual night out. All in all, if you're after a proper pub experience with great food and a welcoming atmosphere, it's well worth a visit – just pop in early or book ahead to avoid any hassle.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely spot on – think cracking fish and chips, homemade pies, and those unbeatable Sunday roasts with bottomless Yorkshire puds, all done with real flair.
-
The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a proper historic charm that makes you feel right at home, especially if you're popping in after a wander around Trafalgar Square.
-
Service is spot on too; the staff are welcoming and efficient, making sure everything runs smoothly without any fuss.
-
They've got a great selection of proper real ales and seasonal tipples like spritzes, perfect for enjoying with mates over a good natter.
-
Plenty of options for events with those beautiful private rooms, ideal for a special gathering or a cheeky celebration.
Cons
-
It might get a bit crowded at peak times, given its prime spot on Whitehall, so you could end up waiting for a table if you don't plan ahead.
-
With a moderate price tag, it could feel a tad steep for everyday visits, especially if you're just after a quick pint rather than a full meal.

This was our first meal in London and we were pleasantly surprised at how good the food was! We loved the decor and ambiance! The vibe felt very true to the area. The service was great too! Very welcoming and efficient!
Best fish and chips we had in London. Every bite of food was delicious! And the vibe was awesome. Would have loved to have stayed longer and enjoyed more beer! Their Jubel Peach was so good!
I had the beef and ale pie (delicious) and my husband had the fish and chips. Our waitress, Judith, provided excellent service. We will visit again when back in London.
Incredibly good! This is the place for pie and fish and chips, but I’m pretty sure the rest of the menu is just as delicious. The flavors are spot on, and the quality is excellent—definitely worth a visit! We always come back here !
Wow, what a meal! We walked in off the street on a Sunday evening not expecting anything special because of the proximity to such touristy things. We were very pleasantly surprised! I had the chicken roast, my daughter had the beef and ale pie. We shared the sticky toffee pudding. It was all superb! Thank you so much for ending our evening on a high note.
