About This Pub

Ah, the Speckled Hen – it's one of those pubs in St Albans that feels like a proper local gem, you know? I've heard from a few mates that it's brilliant for a relaxed day out, especially if you're with the family or walking the dog; they've got all sorts of thoughtful touches like colouring sheets for the kids and a welcoming setup for pets. The food's often spot on for the price, with things like roasts coming in at a steal, and when it's good, it's that comforting, almost homemade kind that leaves you satisfied. Plus, the atmosphere is lovely and cosy, with a beer garden to enjoy on nicer days, and they've got WiFi and parking, which is a bonus if you're popping in after a drive. But, let's be honest, it's not perfect – some reviews reckon the food can be a bit bland or underwhelming, like thin beef that doesn't quite deliver on flavour, and service isn't always up to scratch, with stories of staff who seem a tad inexperienced or not as chatty as you'd hope. Oh, and if you're fussy about your pint, you might miss out on certain beers or find the cask ones a bit too warm. Still, with an overall rating hovering around 4.1, it's clear most folks have a good time, and I'd say it's worth a visit for a casual pint or meal, just go in with realistic expectations and you'll likely have a cracking afternoon.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff can be really warm and attentive, making you feel right at home, especially if you're lucky enough to get someone like Perry on duty.
  • It's a fantastic spot for families and dog owners, with kid-friendly activities and a welcoming vibe that makes it easy to pop in with the little ones or your furry friend.
  • The food offers great value, like those roasts at a reasonable price, and when it's good, it's genuinely tasty with a homely feel.
  • They've got a cosy atmosphere and some top-notch amenities, including a beer garden, WiFi, and parking, perfect for a relaxed catch-up.
  • There's a good selection of beers and specials, plus fun events like quiz nights that add to the community spirit.
Cons
  • Food quality isn't always spot on – some dishes, like the beef slices, can be a bit thin and lacking in flavour, which is a shame for a pub meal.
  • Service can be hit or miss; a few folks have mentioned staff seeming new or not very engaging, which might leave you feeling overlooked.
  • Beer options might not suit everyone, with complaints about missing certain taps and cask beers being too warm for some tastes.
  • It can get surprisingly quiet at times, like on a Sunday lunchtime, so if you're after a lively buzz, it might not hit the mark every visit.

Visited the Pub on a Sunday afternoon, which was surprisingly very quiet considering it was lunchtime. I chose the Roast Beef, which was good value @ £ 14.95. Good size portion. Unfortunately, the beef slices were very thin and lacked flavour and the stuffing was tasteless. My Wife ordered a toasted Cheese Ciabatta. Two small slices of toasted ciabatta arrived, with a small covering of cheese.

At least 3 craft beers on tap and even a 0.0% beer on tap but yes, you've guessed it, no room for a John Smiths tap. Had to have a Guinness as cask beer is too warm and won't stay down. Doubt I'll be returning

Not sure if staff were new because didn’t seem to know what they were doing and zero personality between them all, not welcoming. Never checked with any of us how everything was, no customer service skills at all. Food was very poor. Out of 13 of us and 12 meals not one meal was pleasant to eat or presented well. Garlic bread burnt so crunchy to the extent you could break teeth, microwave meals overcooked, dry and burnt. Katsu curry served with dried clumpy rice through overheating or left under heat lamps/on hot plate. Lasagne was so burnt it had shrivelled up to a burnt crust. Halloumi fries were disgusting and tasted like stale popcorn. Beef burgers were shrivelled and curled up around the edges due to overcooking. Mac and cheese looked like was thrown on dish with it all dripped over side, awful presentation. Salad came with limp browning lettuce and very little else. Slow service and messed up simple drinks order. Tables not cleared, left it to heavily pregnant customer who they watched go back and forth at least 3 times clearing plates and glasses. We’ve visited several times in the past but can honestly say this was the worst visit in every aspect, needs vast improvements and definitely staff training.

I have visited the Speckled Hen on numerous occasions, quiz nights etc, more recently though for lunch with work colleagues and friends. The food is always great and value for money. I received exceptional service this time round from staff member Perry. She was attentive polite and super efficient. I would like to say a big thank you for your customer service 'Perry!' and we look forward to coming back.

The staff were warm and friendly . We loved the cosy ambience of the pub. We visited with our 6 year old daughter and she was provided with colouring sheets and crayons to keep herself occupied. We loved the Christmas jingles which were being played. The food was top-class, with an almost homemade touch and freshness. We loved the Nachos as a starter and the mains were amazing as well. It was our wedding anniversary and Speckled Hen made it a memorable one. We shall definitely visit again! :)
