About This Pub
Ah, The Crown – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in St Albans, with its inviting decor and that genuine warm welcome that makes you feel right at home from the get-go. I've heard from folks that the drinks menu is a winner, packed with everything from premium spirits to fine wines and craft beers, so if you're up for trying something new, this is your spot. The food's generally a treat too; those gourmet burgers and classic fish and chips are fresh and flavoursome, using top-notch ingredients that really hit the mark for a hearty meal. Plus, the beer garden is a absolute joy on a nice day, and it's brilliant for hosting a function or just gathering with friends. On the flip side, it's not all perfect – service can be a mixed bag, with some visits leaving you waiting around a bit more than you'd like, and the food doesn't always maintain that high standard, as a few have noted with dishes tasting different each time. Still, with an overall solid reputation, it's worth popping in for a pint and seeing for yourself; just keep in mind to book ahead if you're after something specific, and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Cons
-
Food quality can be a bit inconsistent; some dishes might not live up to expectations on certain visits, like that smoky chicken salad that's sometimes off the mark.
-
Service isn't always top-notch – you might find yourself waiting a bit or having to chase things up, which can put a dampener on the experience.
-
There have been a few grumbles about specifics, like accessibility for events or not getting a good view of the screens for sports, so it's worth checking in advance if that's your plan.

Lovely venue . Supplied 18th balloons there for Maisie
What great establishment!
Genuinely taken back by the high level of service received from Jess and Declan. Both really nice people and fantastic at their job! Looking forward to returning soon.
I’ve been here many time and recommend it regularly. Especially outside in the summer. We like it so much we booked a disabled accessible table for my disabled parents to visit and watch the Six Nations with us today. We arrived 5 mins ago to be shown a table that had no view of any screen to watch the rugby. We immediately advised that the booking was a specifically advertised Six Nations table. Which we booked for our disabled parents and we’d called to confirm could be used for their specific disabilities. They advised us to just stand and watch the game. I let them know that wouldn’t be possible (due to disabilities) and could they move us to another table.
They stated “nobody else has a problem. The other tables are all booked”.
We again showed our Six Nations disabled booking. Asked nicely again if there was anything they could do to help. They refused. We said we’d have to find somewhere else and politely said goodbye.
They shouted after us that “nobody else complains”
I’m rarely shocked. But I feel so so sorry for disabled people having to deal with this so often.
The Harpenden Arms welcomed us with open arms and provides an accessible seat with a view. Not sure I’ll ever return to The Crown. I never complain but I’m currently so disgusted, I might have to report these staff to management. I can’t believe anyone would be so obviously discriminatory with no sight of shame!
Very hit or miss. We come here quite often and we loved the smoky chicken in the salad - straight off the grill and nicely charred but recently when we came in it tasted completely different definitely not off the grill and it just wasn’t very nice. The service here is not the best we always have to go get our own sauces and cutlery and the staff don’t really check up on you - which for a pricier pub like this one you’d think they would. The fries are definitely hit or miss sometimes they’re crispy straight out of the fryer and sometimes they’re cold. However they do have a separate gluten free menu which is nice.
Went for lunch in March 2024 with a friend. We both enjoyed the food, she had the Sunday menu and I had pie and mash, both portions were generous and food was great. The service was great and staff lovely. Definitely worth a visit.
