About This Pub

Ah, The Toll House – it's one of those classic British pubs that really captures the heart of St Albans, with its welcoming staff who go out of their way to make you feel part of the gang, and a solid lineup of drinks that hit the spot after a long day. You'll love the lively atmosphere where you can sink into a game of darts or catch the footie on the telly, all while enjoying reasonably priced options that keep things accessible for everyone. On the flip side, it's worth noting that the beer choices don't venture too far beyond the traditional, so if you're keen on craft brews, you might find it a bit lacking, and occasionally the place can feel a smidge less inviting if you're not a regular – but overall, it's a gem for a relaxed evening out, and I'd say it's definitely worth popping in for a pint and seeing what the fuss is about.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely brilliant – they're warm, welcoming, and make you feel right at home, like chatting with old mates behind the bar.
  • It's got a proper community vibe, perfect for catching up with friends or enjoying a family get-together in a relaxed setting.
  • The drinks are spot on, with a great selection of beers, ciders, and cocktails, plus pre-chilled glasses that keep your pint tasting fresh and top-notch.
  • Loads of fun things to do, like playing darts, pool, or watching the latest sports on Sky, TNT, or even Amazon Prime – it's a lively spot for a good time.
  • Being inexpensive and open most days, it's an easy choice for a casual night out without breaking the bank.
Cons
  • The beer selection can feel a bit limited, with only one cask ale on offer and not much in the way of craft beers for those after something more adventurous.
  • It might not always come across as super welcoming to newcomers, as one visit felt a tad reserved rather than instantly inviting.
  • There could be occasional staffing hiccups, like when they're advertising for more help, which might mean service isn't always as smooth as it could be.

Friendly local pub. One of the few left in St Albans where you can go in and everyone chats to you, and the bar staff know your drink.

Elliott and Lisa are great hosts, good crowd and very friendly. If I lived here this would definitely be my local.

Love this pub! Not pretentious and everyone I've met there has always been friendly. The pints are absolutely top drawer. Pre-chilled glasses and I've never had a flat one

Nice enough regulars. Great for a game of pool, or even Killer pool on a Friday! However, the runaway highlight of this pub is the staff - specifically Lisa, Nicole & Andy, to be honest they make the place and it is definitely worth a visit.

Traditional, locals’ pub - pool table, dart board, and screens for watching sport. Pleasant enough, but not exactly warm and welcoming. Advertising for staff at the time of my visit, but so many pubs are these days. Only one of the three hand pumps had cask ale on, and no craft beer offerings. More of a Guinness/lager drinker’s pub. Better alternatives nearby, unless this is your home crowd.
