About This Pub
Ah, The Blackberry Jack – it's one of those proper local pubs in St Albans that just gets it right most of the time, you know? From what I've gathered, the team there really pride themselves on being part of the community, offering warm welcomes and dishing up fresh, quality grub at fair prices. Whether you're in for a cheeky pint, tucking into their famous sizzling skillets or flame-grilled burgers, or even sorting a group get-together, it's got that traditional pub feel with a bit of extra spark. I love how they've got options for everyone, including great value deals and a nod to veggies, and the reviews rave about the portions and atmosphere – think end-of-season dinners for a crowd that went off without a hitch. But, let's be straight, it's not flawless; a couple of folks have mentioned waits for food or it not being cooked to perfection, which could leave you a tad frustrated on a busy night. Overall, with such positive vibes from the regulars, I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're after a relaxed spot to catch up with mates – just keep an eye on the service and you'll have a cracking time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and always make you feel right at home, just like popping round to a mate's for a chat.
-
They've got a cracking selection of food with fresh ingredients, including great deals, vegan and veggie options, and tasty classics like sizzling skillets and burgers.
-
It's a top spot for groups or events – plenty of space, including a function area, and they've even hosted big dinners with ease.
-
Prices are honest and fair, making it a brilliant choice for a casual night out without breaking the bank.
-
There's a lovely outdoor area, plus fun bits like darts and pool, perfect for unwinding with friends.
Cons
-
Service can sometimes be a bit slow or forgetful, like when chips took over 35 minutes and weren't quite cooked properly.
-
A few mentions of food not always hitting the mark, such as undercooked items, which might put a dampener on things.

Had an end of season dinner at this pub, group of 30+ of us. Lovely gem of a pub! Good selection of drinks! Food was great! Defo recommend the brownie and chicken pie! Staff were friendly and welcoming! Will be returning soon!
We hosted a private event at BlackBerry Jacks for our rugby club end of season dinner. They catered a 2 course sit down dinner for 50+ guests, plus wine and fizz on arrival. They let us decorate the conservatory and it looked great! We did speeches using the TV screen and it was a perfect size room so that everyone could see and hear us. The staff were so friendly and accommodating, nothing was too much trouble. Food was delicious and super reasonably priced. Wouldn't hesitate to use them in the future! Special shout out to Sydney for going above and beyond!
A great venue to come and relax. Dart board, pool, outside area and restaurant.
One gripe. Ordered chips and the took over 35 minutes to arrive. I think the waitress forgot to put the order through and when we did get them they were quite undercooked. Haven’t eaten in the restaurant yet but people looked very happy. Will definitely return but maybe the younger staff need a bit of training to add that extra touch of care
This is the 2nd time my U3A group have visited BJ and again it was excellent. Last time we had the steak deal of the day which was phenomenal. This time several had the two mains for £13. The standard of food is high as all of us were pleased and our choices ranged from pumpkin burger, plain burger, lasagna, sausages, chicken etc. Cydney behind the bar gave absolutely brilliant service as nothing was too much trouble and she was grace personified! Unfortunately they had no 19 Crimes and apparently it has been discontinued but I had it recently so bit confused. Value for money great. If you do go do not forget to add a tip for great service if you pay at the bar! Bravo and thank you.
This friendly pub offers a good selection of food and drinks, including non alcoholic and alcoholic cocktails at great prices. We had sausage and mash and chicken salad for a main and 🧀 chips for a starter. We sited inside, but there is a seating area outside, too. Portions were decent, and food was tasty. I will definitely come back.
