About This Pub

Oh, the Shakespeare Tavern, it's one of those Bristol spots that just warms your heart the moment you walk in, with its beautiful old Georgian building that's been around since the 1700s. I have to say, the food is an absolute highlight – think tasty classics like wild boar Scotch eggs or a massive Sunday roast that's spot on for value and flavour, and they've got options for everyone, whether you're vegan or just after something light. The drinks menu is brilliant too, with a great range of cask ales and fun specials that make it feel fresh and exciting. The team behind the bar are usually so welcoming and chatty, which really adds to that homely pub feel, especially if you're popping in with the family or the dog in tow. It's got all the nice touches like a beer garden and free WiFi, making it ideal for a sunny afternoon by the harbourside. But, to be fair, it's not all perfect – I've heard it can be a bit up and down with service on busier days, and sometimes the booking system throws a spanner in the works, like tables being held that aren't in use. Still, overall, it's a cracking place for a proper pub day out, and I'd definitely recommend giving it a go if you're in the area; just keep an eye on the timings to avoid any hiccups.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historic Georgian building creates a really charming and cosy atmosphere that makes you feel like you're stepping back in time.
  • They serve up delicious traditional pub food, like those amazing Scotch eggs and hearty Sunday roasts, with plenty of options for veggies and vegans too.
  • The staff are generally super friendly and knowledgeable, always up for a chat and making sure everyone has a good time.
  • Fantastic selection of cask ales and other drinks, including some cracking specials that tie in with events like Pride.
  • It's dog-friendly, family-friendly, and has a beer garden, plus it's right by the Bristol harbourside for a lovely spot to relax.
Cons
  • Service can be a bit hit or miss depending on the day or how busy it is, so you might have the odd off experience.
  • Bookings can sometimes feel unpredictable, like reserved tables sitting empty while you're waiting, which might put a dampener on things.
  • It does get quite popular, so on peak times it could feel a tad crowded, and you might need to plan ahead to snag a good spot.

A really beautiful venue serving great English pub fare in a rustic, charming setting. The staff were extremely knowledgeable and friendly and the food and drinks were delicious, and of a very high quality. The location is also perfect if you're wanting to visit the Bristol harbourside and nearby King Street. Thank you so much to all the team!

Best Scotch Egg I ever had. Made with Wild Boar. Good WIFI and nice selection of Cask Ales. Nice staff. Pork scratchings served as well. Cosy and not the last time I'm here

Cosy. To be honest after a few visits over a week it is hit or miss based on staff and what’s happening re bookings (and this is nothing that the tavern can control but interesting to see “reservations on all tables” but not occupied and reactions when community enters). Top floor seems to be guaranteed offering of tables up stairs (careful vertigo). We ate the pie and fish N chips both amazing. Fries v chips a difference, note to self pay attention. Love the celebration of Christmas. All round a fan but beware of nuances.

Absolute little gem... The atmosphere was buzzing, the staff chatty and friendly and the food was brilliant and good value for money. We went back the next day for the Sunday roast and wow it was amazing, even though we were at the end of service it was fresh, hot and the portions were huge.. wish they were nearer to my home 😌
