About This Pub
Ah, the Saracens Head in Bath is one of those pubs that just feels special, you know? It's got this incredible history, dating back to 1713, and wandering in feels like you've nipped back in time for a chat with Charles Dickens himself. I love how they've kept that vintage charm with the beamed ceilings and tiled floors, making it a proper cosy spot for a pint or a meal. The food's a real highlight – we've had everything from fresh crab burgers to classic fish and chips, and it's all done just right, with generous portions that leave you satisfied without breaking the bank. Plus, it's brilliant for families or if you're out with the dog, and they show sports like the Women's Euros without it turning into a rowdy free-for-all. On the flip side, being an older building, it's not always the most accessible, and it can get a bit packed on busier evenings, which might put you off if you're seeking a peaceful corner. All in all, it's a gem of a place that does the traditional pub experience proud, and I'd say it's well worth a visit for anyone wanting a taste of Bath's character – just pop in early to snag a good spot!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The historic charm is just wonderful – it's like stepping into a piece of Bath's past, with those lovely limestone exteriors and cosy beams that make you feel right at home.
-
The food is spot on; think hearty classics like steak and ale pie or a cracking burger that really hit the spot for me and my mates.
-
Service is always friendly and welcoming, with staff who go the extra mile to make your visit enjoyable, just like that helpful server we met last time.
-
It's super dog-friendly and family-oriented, so you can pop in with the whole gang, furry friends included, without any fuss.
-
They show live sports in a way that's engaging but not overwhelming, perfect for catching a match with a pint in hand.
Cons
-
As an old building, it might not be the easiest for everyone to navigate, with those low beams and steps that could trip you up if you're not careful.
-
It does get quite busy during events or peak times, which might mean a wait for a table or a bit of a squeeze if you're after a quiet chat.
-
The menu's solid but sticks to traditional pub fare, so if you're after something a bit more adventurous, you might find it a tad limited.

Imagine eating at a pub that's been serving food for several hundred years. You walk in, and it feels like you've stepped into the Prancing Pony from Lord of the Rings. You walk up to the bar and order your food. Pea and mint soup with some fish and chips. The bar maid delivers your order and you dig in. The pea and mint soup? Amazing. Fish and chips? Massive and delightful. You look around, and you're impressed with the international crowd eating at a pub with so much character. People are speaking, Dutch, French, and British. For a minute, you really think you've been transported back to the Prancing Pony and expect to see Strider hanging out in the corner by the fire. The crack of pool balls snaps you back to reality. Nay, it isn't the Prancing Pony. It's Saracens Head Pub. One of the oldest and finest establishments in Bath. You're glad you made a stop during your time in the city, and you leave with a full stomach knowing you've experienced a bit of legendary history at the same time.
This place rocks, best steak sandwich we have had. Fantastic service and great atmosphere in Baths oldest pub. Dog friendly and screens showing sport but not loud so not imposing.
Had the most bloody gorgeous steak and ale pie and chips, and my partner had a brilliant house burger. I am convinced that pub food is the backbone of this country and this pub is a perfect example of that. Service was also wonderful, girl behind bar with red hair was polite and welcoming :)
Lovely, cosy pub with great atmosphere and decently priced food! The server who I believe was named Sarah was incredibly patient and helpful, and was a great part of our visit.
Food was delicious, the crab burger was so fresh and flavourful and the chicken and bacon sandwich was made with yummy bread and was cooked to perfection! The fries side was an extremely generous portion for only £3.25 too. Drinks were also incredibly reasonable.
It was very busy due to the Christmas season, but the vibes were so great and the staff were working incredibly hard. Thank you for such a nice meal!
Marvellous place. A spacious maze of a history filled pub. I was well impressed, especially to discover this is where Charles Dickens wrote his first novel, Pickwick Papers. Food n booze also good.
