About This Pub

Ah, Rump and Wade – it's one of those places that really captures the essence of a proper British spot, tucked away in the Cromwell Hotel on High Street. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food is where it truly shines; think hearty, flavourful dishes made with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, and they've got a knack for those rarer cuts of meat that come out tender and full of taste. The staff are generally lovely, always up for a chat and making sure everything runs smoothly, which makes for a relaxed atmosphere, especially with perks like their rewards club that hooks you up with free drinks or discounts. It's got that nice, homely decor too, and events like live music and bottomless brunch add a bit of excitement. On the flip side, though, you might find yourself waiting a bit for your drinks, and those little add-ons to orders can sneak in extra costs that feel unnecessary. Overall, it's a solid choice for a meal out with mates or family, as long as you go in with realistic expectations – the positives far outweigh the niggles, and it's clear why it's got such a decent rating from folks who've been there.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are always so friendly and attentive, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • The food is spot on – good, honest British dishes with fresh ingredients, and they do a cracking job with rarer cuts of meat cooked low and slow.
  • Prices are reasonable for what you get, and their rewards scheme is a brilliant bonus, offering free cocktails or discounts to keep you coming back.
  • It's got a nice, welcoming decor and a convenient location in the heart of Stevenage, perfect for a casual meet-up.
  • They've got live music on the last Friday of every month, plus options like bottomless brunch, which adds a fun vibe to the place.
Cons
  • There can be a bit of a wait for drinks at times, which might put a dampener on things if you're in a rush.
  • Some extras, like marshmallows on a hot chocolate, come with an additional charge, which feels a tad cheeky for what it is.
  • Service might not always be consistent, as one visit could be smooth sailing while another has a few hiccups.

Been here several times for dinner with my family. Staff are always friendly and food has always been great. Reasonably priced and they have a reward scheme which can give you free cocktails as a welcome & if you keep returning and gaining points, you will get money off food too

First time back for an off menu experience! Pleasant staff with an attentive smile and demeanor. Nothing rushed. Drinks where prompt and reasonable Starters came quickly and fresh. The main course was excellent and well proportioned. The benefit of a loyalty voucher made the final bill much more palatable.

Have come here about 3 times now for a cappuccino as they are really nice from here. However, the last time I stopped by I came with my 5 year old son and his dad. I ordered a hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows(the marsh mallows and cream cost an extra 50p) for my son. I was told by the man behind the bar that they had no marsh mallows, but had the cream. I assume he was a manager of sorts as he was fiddling on a laptop the whole time. I was still charged the 50p despite not getting marsh mallows. Upon sitting down near to the bar, I could see a box full of marsh mallows next to the hot chocolate powder. I told his dad about this, so he went to the bar and asked someone else if they had marshmallows. They said yes and put some in a bowl. As his dad was putting the marsh mallows in the hot chocolate, I saw the laptop bar tender look towards him and shake his head with disgust. I ignored it as we were just happy to have what we came for. We enjoyed our drinks. As we got up to leave we got the most disgusted look accompany by obligatory stink eye from the same marsh mallow denying bar tender. I will be returning as I won't let one employees action put me off, but not as often and will avoid when he is behind the bar. I really don't know what has to be wrong with a person to deny a 5 year old boy some marsh mallows in his hot chocolate, but hey ho. It seems this is the non-sensical world we live in with weird people amongst us.

Christmas dinner with colleagues. Large party of us. We had pre-ordered and each dish came out with the corresponding persons name so as to not miss anyone out and to avoid the usual confusion of who had ordered what. Tasty food, attentive service. Bit of a wait for some drinks on occasions (some even arrived after we had paid the bill!) - but it was a busy Friday night near Christmas. Overall, a very positive experience.
