About This Pub

Ah, the Prince of Wales – it's one of those pubs that just wraps you up in that classic British charm the moment you step inside. I love how they've kept the Victorian feel alive while giving it a fresh refurb, complete with a Tolkien-inspired lounge that adds a bit of literary magic to your visit. The staff are absolute gems, always chatting away and making sure everyone's sorted, whether you're there for a quick pint or settling in for the evening. Their real ales are top-notch, and with all those hand pulls rotating regularly, there's always something new to try alongside the spirits and craft beers. Pop out to the beer garden on a sunny day, and you've got this lush spot with fire pits that keeps things cosy even as the night draws in – plus, it's brilliant for watching live sport without missing a beat. On the flip side, it can get a tad dark in the nooks and crannies, which isn't everyone's cup of tea, and if you're after something more modern, it might feel a bit stuck in the past. All in all, though, it's a welcoming spot that's dog-friendly and has solid food options, making it ideal for a laid-back evening with mates – I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're in Birmingham and fancy a proper pub experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, always going above and beyond to make you feel right at home.
  • They've got a brilliant selection of real ales and drinks, with frequent rotations to keep things fresh and exciting.
  • The atmosphere is warm and traditional, with that cosy Victorian vibe and even a nod to J.R.R. Tolkien – perfect for a relaxing pint.
  • It's super dog-friendly, so you can bring your furry mate along for the fun.
  • The beer garden is a real treat, especially in summer, with foliage, fire pits, and a covered area for all-weather enjoyment.
  • They show live sport on indoor and outdoor screens, making it a great spot for catching the game with mates.
  • The pub grub is spot on, with vegan-friendly options that go beyond the usual fare, ideal for a group gathering.
Cons
  • It can feel a bit dimly lit in some areas, which might not suit everyone if you're after a brighter, more modern setting.
  • The traditional style might come across as a tad old-school for those who prefer sleek, contemporary pubs.
  • Opening times can vary a smidge, like on Sundays, so it's worth double-checking if you're planning a late one.

My absolute favourite pub. Always made to feel super welcome by Connor and his team. Good selection of ales. My favourite folk are to be found here and it is dog friendly so Dexter is at home.

Is that a moose head hanging above the door? One thing Prince of Wales doesn’t lack, is character. The 19 Century building is a leather bound, cove of dimly lit wooden rooms. The walls are decorated in places and people from Birmingham’s past. One of the rooms still has service bells located just above its bench’s back rests. In the beer garden there is a mass of additional seating. What was unexpected was the undercover Polynesian style bar area. It’s bloody huge and decorated to reflect the warmth of the tropical culture. Food is courtesy of Cantina. A selection of vegan dishes to sample as part of their tasting menu. These were great to snack on. Excellent complements for the many fine ales The Prince of Wales has on tap.

Very spacious and covered beer garden out back, with its own bar. Great pub grub too, vegan-friendly and different from the usual offerings. Good place for a group get-together.
