About This Pub

Ah, let me tell you about Port & Anchor Kitchen and Bar – it's one of those places that really captures the essence of a good, laid-back spot in Ellesmere Port. From what I've gathered, the views are just brilliant; imagine tucking into a meal while watching the boats on the Manchester ship canal – it's dead relaxing and adds so much to the experience. The staff stand out too; they're proper helpful and handle any problems with a smile, which makes even a tricky situation feel manageable. The food gets plenty of praise, whether you're after a hearty breakfast or something for dinner, and those tribute nights sound like they'd be a laugh with friends. But, and I say this as a mate giving straight advice, it's not all smooth sailing – there have been times when food's been late or a chef's had to dash off, which could leave you waiting around. Plus, a few folks have mentioned hygiene niggles, like spray on the cutlery, and if they're shutting early for an event, you might end up feeling a bit rushed. All in all, it's a solid choice for a casual outing, especially if you're after good value and a welcoming feel, but it's worth keeping those potential hiccups in mind to set your expectations right.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The views are absolutely stunning, especially overlooking the port and Manchester ship canal – perfect for a relaxing meal with a scenic backdrop
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and go above and beyond to sort out any issues, making you feel right at home
  • The food is generally spot-on, with great options for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and those tribute nights sound like a real treat
  • It's a welcoming spot for a casual coffee, ice cream, or full meal, with a cosy atmosphere that keeps folks coming back
Cons
  • There can be occasional service glitches, like delays in food or even a chef calling it a day unexpectedly, which might throw off your visit
  • Sometimes they close early for events, so you might have to rush through your meal if you're not aware
  • Hygiene isn't always perfect, with reports of things like antibacterial spray getting on cutlery, which is a bit off-putting
  • Stock for certain dishes can be unreliable, leading to disappointments if what you fancy isn't available

Really nice place, with multiple lovely views to pick from and awesome staff. Technically there were some problems (late food delivery meaning some dishes were not on, chef apparently walked out without warning), but these were dealt with so well that they actually add to my five star rating. The manager took everything in her stride and got people's meals out so fast you wouldn't believe there had ever been anything wrong. Food was also yum. The salt and pepper chicken burger is tasty, and much more innovative in execution than you might expect from a seaside pub/cafe.

We have been here a few times before and it’s been great! However on this occasion we had booked a table for 10.30am for 6 people. Upon booking no one mentioned that they would be closing at 11.30am for a christening so we had to be in and out in an hour. The food was good until my daughter found a dead bug within her scrambled egg. The waitress had asked if it had flown into her food, but you could clearly see it had been cooked within the egg.. 😱😱 They offered to remove the meal from the bill, when the bill arrived we were charged £125 and asked if we were paying cash or card quite promptly. Luckily another member of the group was paying attention and double checked. Our order consisted of - 4 - Captains Breakfast at £12.50pp 1 - Sailors Breakfast at £10.50pp 1 - Little Skipper Breakfast at £0 These items also came with a complimentary tea or coffee. We then ordered 3 Oranges at £2.60 each. Our bill total should have been £68.30 however our total was almost double £125, it was also written rather on a proper receipt. When questioned the lady tried to say it was correct and that they had to hand write the bill as the till wasn’t working. When we got the calculator out and did the maths the lady tried to say that her maths was no good and to just pay £68.30. I would understand if the bill was out a little but ours was out by almost double! If we had just paid and left we would have been over charged by £56.70 which is ridiculous. I wonder how many other customers they overcharged that morning not forgetting the christening. We came on Saturday 24th May.

We love this little jewel for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Never disappointed. Staff friendly and go beyond service The tribute nights are so good. Come for a coffee or ice cream to watch the tugs on the Manchester ship canal.

Really awful place. When we arrived, one of the girls sprayed the antibac on the table with the cutleries around - we had to ask for clean ones as they were full of antibac on and she hasn’t even bothered to change them herself. When we asked for the the roast, no one knew what they had in stock for the day. I asked for no carrots because of allergies but yet the carrots were on my plate (pictures attached). I asked for extra vegetables and there were no vegetables. My husband ordered the chicken cesar salad and they brought the one with vinegar instead. Glasses dirty like they haven’t been washed in months. Avoid at all cost - so many better places around.
